Lunlun Zou belongs to world''s foremost Guzheng virtuosi. She became well known by her graceful and effortless style. Fame of her artistry brought her to perform at world''s most regarded concert halls and opera houses, including Vienna, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sydney. Frequently, she performs for world''s leading political and business dignitaries, including President Jiang Zemin and Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
Over the many years Lunlun has been playing Guzheng, and perhaps thanks to her presence in and absence from China, she has developed her own fresh, novel style, different from traditional: Lunlun plays Guzheng not only with her hands, but with her heart, passion and grace.
To casual observers, Lunlun''s style may seem effortless, but that is only what they see on the surface. Lunlun plays Guzheng with every muscle of her body, with her heart and soul.
Lunlun''s playing style is very unique and often stirs controversy. Some people believe that there is only one way of playing Guzheng - traditional prosaic style of droning loudness. Lunlun believes that Guzheng instrument is equal to piano in its dynamic might. Lunlun''s style employs the full possible dynamic scale, from ppp to fff, thus greatly expanding the range of possible expressions.
Lunlun is capable of striking the strings softly and very powerfully as well. This requires that she employs most muscles in her fingers, hands, arms and body. When Lunlun plays Guzheng her whole body moves. Lunlun''s passionate style often carries a charge of joy, which is very infectious. Lunlun says: "You must be happy inside to make other people happy."
A group of progressive scholars agree, that Guzheng playing style should evolve naturally, to exploit all the possibilities Guzheng instrument offers for artistic expression. Lunlun also agrees. She won''t let senseless traditions bind her creativity. She refuses to be a "cookie cutter" musician and is proud to have her own individuality. Only Lunlun''s passionate and dynamic style is capable to invoke strong emotions in each member of her audience.
Lunlun was born in a family with four generations-long tradition of Guzheng virtuosity. She started playing Guzheng at age 2, and undertook serious music studies at age 7 when she entered a music boarding school, which was part of the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. There, she led ascetically devoted lifestyle of tireless practice: Every day, she got up at 6 AM and practiced playing Guzheng for 10 hours. Slacking or loafing were not part of Lunlun''s dictionary. While other children were in mischief, Lunlun''s passion was to express her deep thoughts by plucking the strings of her Guzheng. Playing the instrument became Lunlun''s second language - another way of communicating with the world. Already then Lunlun understood, that her immense investment of time and hard work would reap great rewards - to her and to others. It was the ultimate test of her patience and endurance.
At age 18, Lunlun begun music studies at the Shenyang Conservatory, where she was taught by Masters Zhao Yuzhai, Cao Zheng, Lu Diansheng and Zhang Jinxia. Four years later, she graduated with highest honors.
In 1991 she was appointed as a Guzheng soloist in the Liaoning Dance Troupe. In 1995 she moved to New Zealand and was invited to perform at the New Zealand National Museum, New Zealand-Sino Friendship Association, "Orient Express Radio", "Page 90" Gallery of Porirua, and the Genghis Khan Cultural Heritage Exhibition. In 1997, she was invited by the New Zealand''s Governor General to perform for the opening ceremony of the "Asian Arts Festival" at the Government House. In 1999, Lunlun performed for Jiang Zemin during his visit in Sydney and in 2004 for the Chief Executive of Macau, Edmund Ho.
Lunlun has been performing in public since very young age and often took part in competitions of Chinese traditional music. She won many prizes and awards. She regularly tours through major cities in China, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, USA, records for radio and television and often performs to benefit the poor and unfortunate.
While she lived in Australia, Lunlun established a Chinese traditional band "3 Sisters", with Guzheng, Pipa (Lulu Liu) and Erhu (Yingying Liu) instruments. The band often performed in Sydney Opera House with East-West Symphony Orchestra.
Lunlun''s mastery of Guzheng has been eternalized by the Art Tune Recording Company of Hong Kong and released under a special edition of "Spring Hope".
Lunlun''s interest in music is not limited to Chinese and Oriental music. She also enjoys listening to Western classical music and has traveled to Vienna, Paris, Frankfurt and Prague to study opera and classical music from the most renowned performers, conductors and conservatory professors, including soprano star Ms. Pecková. Lunlun has deep appreciation for ancient folk music of other world cultures and often includes their music in her concerts.
Because of her love for music, Lunlun strives passionately to promote rich Chinese and Asian cultural heritage inside and outside China.
