While listening to cuts from A.J. Bascom’s newest album, Notes from Berlin, the bassist Nat Grainger remarked, “This is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Nobody makes music like this.” Indeed, Bascom blends diverse influences to create his stunningly original style of jazzy alternative rock and blues with roots that spread from folk to funk. His powerful bass vocals communicate lyrics that are artfully crafted and refreshingly original, written in a poetic style that harkens back to Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. His sound has been described as similar to John Mayer, Norah Jones, and Johnny Cash, but his ability to write in a number of different styles allows his music to transcend any specific genre tag and exist in its own little world.
A recent graduate of Dartmouth College who specialized in psychological and brain sciences, Bascom also studied music in London with professors from the Royal Academy of Music. While in college, he performed at a variety of venues in North America and Europe. Additionally, he toured and recorded with the award-winning Dartmouth Aires, winning CASA’s male album of the year in 2003 and 2005. In 2000, at the age of 15, Bascom released his debut album playing all instruments, The Tail that Wags the Dog, and received nearly 10,000 downloads on https://www.tradebit.com, reaching #3 on the Blues/Rock charts.
