Fresh, sincere, soulful, timeless...
These are a few of the words that have been used to describe the original music of Acoustic Endeavors. With a sound that never strays far from their bluegrass roots, the appeal is broader than any genre definition. Acoustic Endeavors’ fans come from across the spectrum of acoustic music — bluegrass, folk, old time and country. Having both a male and a female singer/songwriter in the group allows for a wide variety of sounds and topical perspectives, and their songs reach beyond the standard verse/chorus format which is often expected from a five piece string band.
Acoustic Endeavors has been performing and recording since the early 1990s, consistently based around the singing and songwriting skills of Warren Amberson and Kelly Green. Both are graduates of the bluegrass music program at East Tennessee State University and have toured extensively in both the US and Europe in many different bands, including The Lost & Found, Queen Of Hearts, Foreign Affairs and the 3rd ID US Army Band — the first officially recognized US Army bluegrass band, which Warren formed while in the service.
They are joined by long-time Acoustic Endeavors bassist and harmony singer, Greg Honeycutt, a fixture in the bluegrass scene in SW Virginia for many years and a highly regarded performer and session player. On guitar is Dewey Peters, a superb flatpicker and the band’s resident audio engineer. The newest member is John Lawless on banjo. Many folks in the bluegrass world know John from his work with AcuTab Publications, a company that publishes instruction books and videos for bluegrass instruments, but may not realize that he is a fine picker as well.
You may recall the first Acoustic Endeavors CD release in 1994, Coming Of Age (Common Folk 0001), which was very well received by both folk and bluegrass radio and critics. The new CD is called Sneak Preview since it is meant as a reintroduction of sorts, and a taste of their sound prior to the release of the next full-length project of new, unreleased material which is currently being recorded. Harking back to the days of vinyl, you might think of Sneak Preview as an EP CD — a short format
release with 7 new original songs, offered at a special price. All of the songs on Sneak Preview are written and performed by the members of the group - no hired guns! This is the sound of Acoustic Endeavors: From the Blue Ridge... with an edge!
