"The Andy Rau Band''s approach is modern and genre-bending applying bluegrass accents to songs steeped in contemporary folk and country, with hints of rock and pop as well. The group''s prime strength is an instrumental attack founded on inventive, dramatic arrangements, full of pregnant pauses and resonant chording, and keyed by fiery, fluid soloing on banjo and guitar."
--Mike Boehm, Los Angeles Times

BIOGRAPHY
Andy Rau : banjo, rhythm guitar, vocals
Les Johnson: lead, rhythm & slide guitars, vocals
Evan Anderson: mandolin, vocals
George Boravich: bass, vocals

Andy Rau was born and raised in Southern California and has been performing professionally since 1975. His carrier began at Knott''s Berry Farm where he worked for ten years as the amusement park''s in-house banjo player. While there he performed in a host of musical situations including bluegrass bands, country rock bands and variety stage productions.

In 1986 he formed The Andy Rau Band as a means to showcase his own material. He sought out bandmembers that would enable his desire to break the mold of the homogeneous music that was being played with folk instrumentation. The perfect balance was struck with musicians with Les Johnson on guitar, Evan Anderson on mandolin and George Boravich on bass, all having familiarity with a variety of musical styles.

Now each song could be written and brought to the band without any preconceived notions as to what form it had to take. Each was allowed to shape it own identity without borrowing from old tried-and-true formulas. Utilizing Andy’s songwriting and employing the commonalities in all music rather than seeking out the differences that divide one genre from another, is what gives the Andy Rau band its individuality.

The band tours the United States and Canada performing at music festivals, concert halls, fairs and corporate events. They also continue to play well known venues such as Disneyland, Six Flags, Sea World, Paramount Studios, Disney Studios, Burbank Studios. Along the way the band has received much-deserved recognition that has landed them endorsements with The Deering Banjo Company, GHS Strings and ProPik fingerpicks. Also feature articles began to appear in Acoustic Musician, Bluegrass Unlimited and Bass Player Magazines as well as The Banjo Gazette published in Great Britain.

Prior to 2006 the band had released four successful albums… My Angel, On The Horizon, Different Man and Penny Moon. Recently Andy founded Anchovy Artists Records and Purple Raven Publishing and after a long hiatus in the recording studio, The Andy Rau Band has re-emerged with the release of fifteen original compositions on the CD Higher Ground. This recording introduces inventive new material to the world of acoustic music.

DIFFERENT MAN is probably the most traditional sounding of any of The Andy Rau Band recordings. If your tastes lean in that dirrection this may be the album for you!
