Memories in Black and White – Allan Butt
Ricky Chancey, former member of Hank William, Jr.’s touring band; John Anthony, one of the original founding members of the southern rock group Wet Willie; Phil Proctor, one of the best lead guitarists along the Gulf Coast; Pat and Benita Murphy, founding members of the bluegrass band Delta Reign; Pat’s son, Sean Murphy on drums; and Allan Butt, award-winning artist. What do they all have in common? They all came together on Allan’s first music CD in the Southern Genre.
Allan Butt is well known in art circles along the Gulf Coast for his award-winning paintings and has been featured in newspapers and magazines, but few have known that he is a songwriter and musician. Allan has put together his album, Memories in Black and White, a collection of 12 original songs, which he defines as Southern Gumbo. His musical recipe calls for some southern rock, some southern folk, and some country and then he adds a touch of bluegrass for flavoring. Bring to a boil then simmer. Put on your headphones and enjoy being Southern. His songs celebrate the South; its past and its present. He sings about Dixie burning, about Alabama and its maximum security prison, about the brave Americans who gave their lives fighting in Iraq, about lost loves, about mother, and about God. It’s all here, in Memories in Black and White.
With the encouragement he received from Pat and Benita Murphy, as well as their incredible talents, the Memories in Black and White project was born. With help of John Anthony on keyboards, Rickey Chancey on steel peddle, Phil Proctor on lead guitar, and Sean Murphy on drums, the songs came together to form a musical patchwork quilt, a musical gumbo, a celebration of being Southern.
