BIOS began when Bill Byrne (The Painful Leg Injuries, The Harmful Free Radicals), John Ibarra (El Plan De Aguavodka) and Marco Oppedisano were preparing for a performance at New York City’s Monkey in early 2007. While preparing their individual sets, they decided to meet and record improvisations as a trio. This CD includes two of the second session’s tracks, After The Universe Consumes Us All the Singularities Felt Particularly Useless, and It’s Not A Paradox If It Doesn’t Hurt A Little. Forever Dividing and Evolving is a recording of the first live performance by BIOS on February 17th, 2007. The name BIOS was chosen due to the initials of the band members’ surnames.
BIOS essentially an electro-acoustic improvisational trio, follow in the traditions laid down by AMM, Taj Mahal Travellers, MEV, Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza Azioni, among others. John Ibarra’s processed tapes, radio, clarinet and effects loops are the core of the BIOS sound, static massive drones that provide the foundation. Bill Byrne’s live laptop electronics, circuit bent instruments, Game boy and trumpet sometimes melt into Ibarra’s sounds to create a stratospheric background, and at other times join Oppedisano’s colorful guitar pyrotechnics in the foreground. Marco Oppedisano’s guitar is most recognizable sound in BIOS, but Marco wields his with such studious control, occasionally jumping forward in full psychedelic color, often blending seamlessly a part of the world being created by the other players.
BIOS’s approach completely eschews composition or planning. Their pieces move as a whole, though at times the individual players come to the front, it’s not about soloing, it’s about setting the outline that other players follow and manipulate. After The Universe Consumes Us All the Singularities Felt Particularly Useless begins with a kaleidoscope of jagged textures, before the trio enter a phase of playful bouncing with ominous feedback rising until it’s conclusion. It’s Not A Paradox If It Doesn’t Hurt a Little begins with earlier quiet contemplation and results in a section of tense Hitchcock-soundtrack styled interplay.
Marco Oppedisano is a composer and avant-guitarist who combines gorgeous classical structures with dynamic and experimental techniques. He has previously released a collection of solo recordings Electrocacoustic Compositions For Electric Guitar and collaboration with David Lee Myers, Tesla At Coney Island, both on OKSRNA. In late 2008, he released the stunning follow up to his first OKSRNA release The Ominous Corner. Bill Byrne is the co-owner of OKSRNA, is one half of the Painful Leg Injuries with his wife, Suzanne and a member of The Harmful Free Radicals. John Ibarra performs as El Plan De Aguavodka, John does a weekly podcast as El Plan De Aguavodka, and appeared with Byrne on OKSRNA’s compilation release Men In White Coats.
