Folk CD Review Round Up by Adam Horovitz . CD Review A Land Very Close Ceilidh-Jo Rowe
WHAT a lovely surprise this album is; comprising folk songs, lullabies and nursery rhymes from Trinidad to Bulgaria, Lands End to Japan, it is aimed squarely at children but there is more than enough packed into its brief running time to appeal to broad-minded adults as well.
Too many albums for children are riddled with dreadful hands-on-your- hips stage school camp.
Not this one; Ceilidh-Jo’s voice is as delicately earthy and honest as it is on any of her own songs and Matthias Weston’s lyrical acoustic guitar playing and sparse percussion complements it beautifully.
If you want to broaden your children’s musical horizons early, this is the album to buy; there’s more than enough for them to engage with and sing along to without ever feeling patronised.
Highlights are Swinging Along (I’d have loved this song with a passion as a child), Land of the Silver Birch and Japanese Rain Song. And the eco-friendly packaging is a delight too.
The album closes with three lullabies, which are astonishing. It’s a slight shame that they are separate songs – they would have made a glorious closing medley, merged into each other in the manner of the second side of the Beatles’ Abbey Road. That one very minor grumble aside, this is a fantastic CD.
"We loved the CD it’s the quietest I have had the boys in the car in a long time. We had to play it on the way to school today as well!! " A mother of 2 boys.
"I must let you know that your beautiful voice sings us all to school every morning, and home again in the afternoon. In fact we''ve played it everyday for days and days. I put it on when the kids are sad, and when they are happy! Aster sings along now! The songs are well-chosen and teach children about music in a beautiful, fun way! " A mother of 2 girls and 2 boys.
