TWO
BABBIE GREEN And JOHN BOSWELL
DUETS....Mostly
(LALS - 1001)(Release Date 9.8.06)

Putting Babbie Green and John Boswell on disc together only makes sense. Their individual bodies of work as solo, as well as collaborative artists and writers, enables them to bring a richnesses to their joint musical endeavors that makes the whole much greater than the sum of its parts. Green has two previous CDs on LML Music; Boswell has seven on Hearts of Space Records. Borh multi award winners, their voices, taste, humor and hearts blend beautifully, as writers, singers, keyboard players and orchestrators. Green’s lyrics continually convince listeners that she is writing their own personal stories. The music of both Boswell and Green, while very easy on the ear, is full of delightfully unexpected twists, turns and textures. Although the majority of the fifteen songs on this disc were written by Green, Boswell and she collaborated on four of them; and they each have a song written with a different collaborator, as well...Boswell with singer/songwriter Julie Last and Green with singer/songwriter Gina Kronstadt.

TWO would seem to take you on a journey...whether from a clear early morning through the brightness of noon, afternoon, early evening and finally, deep night...or from the playful trust of childhood through the growing depth and awareness of maturity and a a resting place in serenity and the acceptance of what is...that’s for the listener to decide. Or maybe it’s just a great collection of really good songs, with flavors of Broadway, standards, jazz, folk, New Age, and a healthy dash of whimsy.

BIOS:

BABBIE GREEN: Born in NYC, daughter of Johnny Green (composer of BODY AND SOUL, I COVER THE WATERFRONT, OUT OF NOWHERE, etc. and five-time film scoringAcademy Award winner) and actress Betty Furness (before her stints as spokesperson and consumer advocate), Green grew up in a world of theatre, film and music. Taking her first piano lessons at 7, she wrote her first song at the age of 4. A graduate of Smith College, she is trained as both a classical pianist and actor, and has worked as musical director and accompanist, as well as a performer in front of the lights. Her musical background is eclectic, including the obvious piano repertoire, from Baroque through Classical, Romantic and 20th century styles - authentic (as opposed to pop) folk music (she was the music arranger for Simon and Schuster’s final Fireside Folk Song Book) - the great American songbook - film, Broadway, pop, jazz...and on. With a solid background in the traditional, she is a true original in her own work. Winner of the first Johnny Mercer Songwriting Award and the 1994 Backstage Bistro Award for Outstanding Songwriter, her first CD, IN NOBODY’S SHADOW, has been called “...a contemporary cabaret treasure chest...” (Drama-Logue); and her second, a two-CD set, SOLDIERS OF THE HEART”, received a MAC nomination for Multiple Artist Recording of the Year in 2001 (both CDs available on LML Music). A former Master Teacher at The Cabaret Symposium (Eugene O’Neill Center), her songs have been recorded and/or performed by Andrea Marcovicci, Michael Feinstein, Margaret Whiting, Amanda McBroom, among many; and she herself has performed them at numerous venues in New York City, including Carnegie Hall; the 92nd Street Y (Lyrics and Lyricists Series - The New Breed); Town Hall; in Washington, D.C. at The Smithsonian Institute; at the Chicago Humanities Festival; and up and down the West Coast. She lives in Los Angeles.

JOHN BOSWELL: Boswell, born in Seattle and raised in Northern California, also grew up in a musical household, his father being a passionate amateur pianist, calling on young John’s gifts from a very early age. While attending UCLA (where he won the Frank Sinatra Award for Pop Instrumentalist), his skills as pianist and musical director, as well as actor, have taken him from major theatre, (CRAZY FOR YOU, THE SECRET GARDEN) and concert halls (LIZA - STEPPING OUT AT RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL; shows with Andy Williams, Judy Collins, Bob Newhart) to intimate cabarets, here and abroad. Boswell is one of the most sought after musical directors in the world of cabaret on both coasts. He is known internationally for his seven CDs of original music on Hearts Of Space records (LOVE, TRUST, FESTIVAL OF THE HEART, COUNT ME IN, THE PAINTER, KINDRED SPIRITS, and a recent compilation release). He wrote the music for the Cable Ace award-winning KATHY AND MO - THE DARK SIDE. He has won two GLAMA Awards: in 1999 for Male Artist of the Year and in 2000 for Best Pop Instrumental (“Recollection” from the CD, TRUST). Delighting cabaret and concert audiences in venues all over the U.S., he makes his home in Los Angeles.

(A TASTE OF) PRESS QUOTES -

BABBIE GREEN

...breathtaking originality....an extraordinary talent...the kind of harmonic subletly and melodic flow one only hears in the most gifted songwriters...Like Stephen Sondheim, she tends to steer clear of standard pop song forms in favor of a more intimate companionship between the primal elements of melody and language...Green’s songs offer extraordinary pleasures....the product of an imagination that moves seamlessly through the poignancy of humor and the perils of irony...
Los Angeles Times

The world needs more Babbie Greens...What Green accomplishes in
her songwriting is ideally capturing a thought, emotion or memory and
recounting it in terms with which one instantly identifies... one is alternately awed by the breadth of Green’s musical and lyrical craftings and immediately inspired to join in song...

JOHN BOSWELL

...demonstrates...that he has mastered the elusive art of communicating deeply-felt sentiment without lapsing into facile sentimentality. The emotional honesty of his music is balanced by a technical sophistication
and refined sensibility which enable him to skillfully explore...the range of our human emotions.
