Moons of Jupiter, on their fourth record, -sogni del volo-, settle into maturity in their song writing as well as their production. The band continues their quest to create a self-described “romantic, progressive, alt-folk” music, and come closer than ever to realizing that vision. This is a more stripped down, spacious affair, that proves to be as intense as it is intimate, with singer Christopher Clayton Holt’s vocal work stronger than ever. The arrangements mainly focus on voice and an acoustic guitar, with the subtle decoration of a distorted piano, the occasional burst of electric guitars, and discrete electronic manipulations. One notable highlight is the title track''s (“sogni del volo” is the italian for “dreams of flying”) orchestral climax. The seamlessly well built arc of the record almost demands that it be listened to from start to finish, with headphones and dim lighting, in order to fully absorb the story of love, loss, and release that connects each of the eleven songs. The music combines elements from the bombastic yet vulnerable writing style of the Smashing Pumpkins, the intimate arrangements of Nick Drake, the honesty of P.J. Harvey, and the curiosity of Tom Waits. The CD version of the record is well worth owning, with its stunning visual artwork, and delicately handmade packaging (a limited edition of only 100 copies). In time -sogni del volo- may prove to be Moons of Jupiter’s first masterpiece.
