Austin Music Artist Finds Some Spice in Making Music
Singer-songwriter Michael Trevino knows everything happens for a reason.
Take, for instance, his promising gymnastics career while attending Ohio State University, when a nasty fall while finishing a floor routine left him with a severe broken ankle and dashed his dream of competing at the Olympic level.
“I was so disappointed and depressed for about six months because I had been training really hard for so long,” he says. “But I had to quit because the fracture was so severe. The doctor told me I could either quit and walk normal, or continue with gymnastics and walk with a limp and possibly a cane when I was older.”
Trevino, however, snapped back to his real self and it didn''t take too long. That’s because he already was fanning the flames of another desire slowly burning in his heart: music.
Since moving to Austin in 2001, the San Antonio native began to earnestly chase his ambition of becoming a singer and songwriter. Recently, he released a cd single with the help of music producer Charlie Guidry and Jonny Dub.
Recorded at Austin’s Media Tech studios, it contains a self-penned song, “One Nite Fling,” which the 38-year-old artist describes as a sexy funky tune with a free spirit attitude, and “One Nite Fling DJ Monnerat Remix,” a dance floor hit great for people this summer, he says, who need some release from the day to day..
At the moment, he is working on completing another cd single, which, he says, will contain a great athem and expects to release it in 2010.
Trevino also gets a thrill out of performing in front of an audience and doesn’t shy away when opportunity knocks, be it at a gay pride fest, gay club, private event or a Princess Cruise ship.
“You get such a rush of energy,” he says, “and when you give it out, and it comes back to you, it’s awesome to feel that connection with people.”
The artist finds inspiration to write songs based on his experiences with family and friends who are musically talented as well.. “All my songs have to do with parts of my life, including all feelings deep felt like, love and letting go and getting down,” he says with a chuckle.
For now, Trevino continues to concentrate on his music.
“I just want to keep creating music for my community and friends,” he says. “It’s an outlet that helps me express things in my life or in my head. It also helps me move on to the next turn in life.”
In retrospect, Trevino believes a golden opportunity awaited him when his gymnastics career was sidelined after his accident because, perhaps, he would not have focused on his music.
“I really think I am blessed because at this point in my life I have the best of both worlds,” he says. “I’m co-owner of a gymnastics gym and I’m also working on my music. So, you see, you really can have a life alive.”
