Details:
Madaket was formed in 2007 by sisters Bailey (the older one) and Piper Cain (the younger one). The two grew up singing together and with their parents in Massachusetts, and, after the family moved to Texas, they joined a band called Spur of The Moment that consisted mostly of musically inclined veterinarians. They are greatly influenced by their parents'' musical tastes, which range from traditional Irish musicians to blues greats such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday, from singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell to the harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel, from James Taylor to Judy Collins to Allison Krauss to Crosby Stills and Nash. The two also harbor a deep appreciation for "bad pop music" (check out their unbearably soulful, unplugged acoustic cover of Akon''s "Don''t Matter" on youtube). At age six, Piper learned how to harmonize, which actually proved to be a bone of contention between the two because for about five years it was impossible to get her to actually sing the melody. Eventually, they managed to work things out and remain friends.
One boring afternoon while Bailey was sitting around her college dorm looking for something to do, she recorded a song on YouTube that, surprisingly, seemed to go over fairly well. Eventually, Bailey''s page on YouTube gained popularity, and, after Piper collaborated with her on a couple of songs, the two decided to make a CD. This enterprise was greatly aided when Bailey discovered that she could, in fact, write a song (Piper had been writing since age seven). The collaboration resulted in Madaket, a blending of folk, jazz and blues. Bailey''s rich alto and Piper''s smoky soprano voices are complemented by their friends Ethan Philbrick, Ben Cattley and Caroline Praderio on cello, guitar and saxophone, respectively. Their dad also played bass and drums.
Live shows with Madaket are somewhat difficult as Bailey attends college in New York while Piper slogs away through high school in Texas. But, should any show be put together at some point, or if either of them go at it solo, we''ll be sure to post this on our website.
