Details:
"Naked and Without Teeth" is the debut album of Texas-based independent rock band Whu Gnu.
Originally released in early 1997, NaWoT represents songs written and recorded by the band between 1993 and 1996. The entire album is a home-grown production, as it was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely by the young band members themselves. In 2009, the NaWoT album was remastered and released on CD https://www.tradebit.com
The band''s sound is most often described as "breakfast rock" though intellectual folk rock may offer a more pointed illustration. The songs are richly orchestrated by the six-member band and offer many textures to enjoy throughout the album.
These include:
Vocals, guitars and mandolin, by Jonathan M
Electric guitars by Jack Worthy
Bass guitar by Joe Reeves
Piano, accordion, and keyboards by Mike Dow
Drums by Bo Griffin
Percussion by Ken Evers-Hood
The album opens with a slow and dramatic performance of the only non-original song ever released by Whu Gnu, "Katie Cruel." This folk ballad, dating back as far as the American Revolutionary War, sets the mood for the intellectual nature of the entire album.
Other noteworthy recordings on the album include: "Hey Michel" a fast-paced tune about the
French philosopher Michel Foucault, "Mata Hari" a self-indulgent tale of revenge, "Erasmus" a powerful ballad of the Dutch monk Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, "Atlantis" a dream-like song of love lost, and "Cleopatra''s Needle" a rolling road-trip song of new discoveries. Of course, there are several more gems to be discovered while mining this album.
Following the 1997 release of NaWoT, the band relocated from Bedford, Texas, to Austin, Texas to join the vibrant Austin music scene. The band gigged regularly in the Austin area including performances during the South by Southwest music and film festival. In 2001, Whu Gnu won the University of Texas "Jam Fest" battle of the bands and was invited to perform at the 40-Acres music festival.
During the heyday of Whu Gnu in Austin, the band recorded several more original songs. In an effort to re-brand the Whu Gnu image, the band played a few shows under the name "Walking Spanish." Whu Gnu''s second album is named "Walking Spanish" to pay tribute to the new directions the band was exploring at the time. The band is preparing to release a third album "Stand of Pines," in the near future, to further document the recordings made during the time between the two existing albums.
In 2003, members of the band decided to follow their own paths. The albums "Naked and Without Teeth" and "Walking Spanish" have been posthumously released to the public as an archive of the original sound that Whu Gnu brought to its fans during the turn of the 3rd millennium.
