Instead of starting out by giving you a mini bio or insight on the group, let me just go straight to the content of the cd - Obson Most Wanted: A Quema Ropa
To me this cd can be divided into 2 parts: FOR THE STREETS (trax 1-9), FOR THE PARTY (trax 10-18)
I would describe this as underground latin hip hop world music that crosses boundaries. Their ability to keep it in the Pure Hip Hop essence while displaying a distinguished palette of variation becomes evident with tracks like the cumbia infused "Asi Como Viene Cumbia Remix", the R&B silky choruses on "Eso Que Tu Me Das", and the down tempo street conscious lyrical fire in tracks like "Ya No Hay Lagrimas", "De Casta le Viene Al Perro" and both Cacko Mc and Doble D Interludes. There is also the extraordinary masterpiece "La Cruz De Cristo" that many Christian rap fans will make their own, although this album is not specifically of that genre.
And then there is "El Mejor Suicida" which will leave you with your mouth open, nuff said.
As far as party bangers there are tracks such as "Ella Quiere Un Palo", "Asi Como Viene", "Los Capos Del Crimen", "Desde El Barrio" amongst others that djs will wanna crank in the club; but the most notable is the amped up adrenaline filled "Sin Decir Nada", which kinda reminds me of the good ol'' days of hip hop when tracks like House of Pain''s "Jump Around" used to dominate the dancefloor and hip hop was all about having a good time. As a matter of fact "Sin Decir Nada" actually is translated into ''without really saying anything'' in other words ''we''re not trying to sound hard or give you a message or preach anything wit this song, We just want you to bounce''! And speaking of those Golden Years of Hip Hop, this track to me is reminiscent of a House of Pain, Das Efx, and Fu Schnikens all wrapped up into one. And now that we''re on the subject you can hear the inspiration from Brand Nubian, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Main Source, Cypress Hill and Gangstarr especially production-wise on many of their tracks. These icons are what they listened to since they were 12 years old and were obviously an inspiration for their souls.
It is important to note that the comparisons I''m making are just my observation plus opinions and its not like they set out to record a Classics inspired album. But what they did set out to do is make a Dope Hip Hop Album that''s sure to become a Classic. And whether you are a classic hip hop connoisseur, or a curious new hip hop explorer, - you will no doubt thank god that someone took time out to do such an excellent piece of work as this. Tell your Friends.
