Details:
‘Inside the Wolves’ is the first release from Hollowbody, the musical project of Bristol songwriter Dan Weltman.
Its 8 songs inhabit a peculiar universe where old-time music hall, wistful folk ballads and modern takes on everyday heartbreak coexist happily in a lone suburban voice.
‘Inside the Wolves’ has its conception in a large batch of material written during a lengthy period of illness. He spent time convalescing in an old country hotel a family friend had bought to renovate. As he tells it: ‘It was kind of a run-down place, but there was a large garden and a library with a gramophone player.”
“Digging around I found a whole box of old 78s. A lot of the time it was just me and the cat and these records. I was captivated by the sounds and spaces trapped in the grooves, but also the fragility of the records themselves… There was a whole collection of broken pieces in the bottom of the box. I started wondering one day what it might sound like if I could somehow glue those bits together.”
“I’ve always felt music in my blood. My grandfather played violin with the best bandleaders of his day such as the Great Geraldo. I always seem to leave a part for him in my songs in case he were to walk into the room.”
ITW was recorded at his home in the Bristol suburb of Montpelier.
PRESS:
“This is delightful… a bit of banjo, a bit of harmonica and brass, and a sound he describes as ‘layabout country folk’. What more could you want in this weather?”
The Guardian
“Hollowbody is the work of Dan Weltman from Bristol, and his manifesto appears to be to update acoustic blues for the modern age, while throwing in a bit of English folk whimsy for good measure…‘Inside the Wolves’ is a fantastic debut effort managing to cross the old time music of America with some good old fashioned English eccentricity to generally excellent effect. Rating: 8/10.”

“I opened my post this morning and there was a hand-written postcard from this chap Dan Weltman who records as Hollowbody. I whacked this straight on and, oh dear, it''s really, really good. Weltman has a fantastically easy sort of voice, like he''s not hugely bothered if you''re listening or not, and he swings in and around the tune with a real charm.”
