Details:
Richard Feren is an award-winning composer, musician and sound designer from Toronto, Canada. Since the mid-1980s he has written and produced a vast and eclectic opus of music ranging from delicate, haunting instrumentals to full-blown electronic-industrial sonic onslaughts. He has created thematic music and soundscapes for numerous theatre and dance performances, music scores for films and television, a suite of spacey middle-eastern dance music ("Descent of Ishtar"), and with his Crimescene project, two albums of brooding dark-ambient electronica, with a third in the works. Melding his classical training with an early and avid interest in electronic instruments and sonic textures, Richard continues to defy expectations with his diverse and atmospheric work.
"Descent of Ishtar" is a suite originally commissioned by the Arabesque Dance Company for its groundbreaking production, Dance of the Seven Veils. It tells the story of the Goddess or Mother of the Universe who travels through seven gates to reach the Lord of Death in the Underworld. She embarks on this journey through seven dreamlike worlds in search of the answer as to why her children must suffer sickness and death. Each world is musically invoked with its own tempo, mood and texture. The disc also features two bonus tracks, including "Das Rheingold", created for a theatrical adaptation of the Wagner opera, and "Thunderveil", a powerful outtake from the Ishtar sessions.
