Meadville, PA—After holing up for two weeks in a small house in West Nashville with acclaimed producer/musician Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider, Rodney Crowell), Gypsy Dave and the Stumpjumpers emerged with the band’s most personal and profound music to date, A Bucketful of Ghosts (due May 12).
“We''d start working in the morning and go into the late hours of the night, singing, playing, listening, and sometimes just talking,” says front man Dave Washousky (Gypsy Dave) of the rural Pennsylvania based group. “We had a chance to put ourselves wholly into our music. And, working with Will Kimbrough gave us the opportunity to achieve a lot of the things that we''d always wanted to push for musically. He was the perfect match for us, genuine, talented, and kind.”
The title of the album came from a passage from John Steinbeck’s “Travels With Charlie,” in which Steinbeck embarks on a cross-country trip to rediscover America. After finding himself in the heart of his boyhood home in the Salina Valley, he makes peace with a “permanent and changeless past where my mother is always shooting a wildcat and my father is always burning his name with his love”. That town, and its people were his bucketful of ghosts. Those stories made an impact on Dave and gave him the inspiration for the songs on the record. “These songs are just that for me,” he adds. “Because we are all collectors of our own passings.”
A Buckeftul of Ghosts is the band’s second album and the follow up to 2007’s As the Stars Gather Light.
About Gypsy Dave and the Stumpjumpers
Drawn together in rural Pennsylvania, and performing nationwide for two years, Gypsy Dave and The Stumpjumpers are a rising force in the world of Americana music. Backed by a unique combination of strings and voices, Gypsy Dave is also emerging as one of the preeminent songwriters of his generation. At only 25 years of age, Dave has become a voice for the changing times. And in a world that moves faster everyday, it''s good to know that someone is carrying our stories.
Joining Dave are two eclectic string players. Lisa Joseph, 22, brings 12 years of symphony experience to the contemporary folk sound, melding classical and alternative styles to provide a powerful and ethereal layer. Ryan Nageotte, 26, is the driving force that holds their songs together. Playing upright bass and singing harmony, his style has developed into a truly unique blend of contemporary folk and the harder edged music he was reared on.
Their music has been described many ways. But whether it makes us laugh, cry, or just stop and think, you can be sure of one thing: the music of Gypsy Dave and The Stumpjumpers is honest. It is sound that speaks to each of us; it is the sound that truly is a part of us all. And wherever you might find them next, you can be sure they''ll be singing, playing, and wearing their hearts on their sleeves.
