Seeded with fresh, beautifully-crafted songwriting, Annie and Rod Capps'' sixth CD, “My Blue Garden”, is a collection of soulful sketches rooted in small town USA. Highly influenced by real life and their own surroundings, these characters could be your next door neighbor, a member of your family or a close friend.
The album begins with a startling first line: "Serenity Road got paved today..." and draws you in from there. The darker tales of stand-out tracks “Sheriff’s Daughter” and “Another Day” give way to lighter fare, as in the delightful ode to their nearby fishing hole “Honey, Sugar, Baby, Mine”. With vivid imagery and heart-felt portraits, Annie is blooming as a story teller, artfully leaving just enough out of the tale for the listener to fill with their own imagination. A sassy interpretation of the magical Dave Carter song “Crocodile Man” adds playful energy, leading into the old-timey title track “My Blue Garden” which partakes in a little nursery rhyme metaphor. The journey ends with another cover song, the moving, poetic, spiritual “Soon Be Free” by as yet unknown, Jon Milan.
My Blue Garden’s smart, facile production is the work of Glenn Brown (Jeff Daniels, Steppin’ in it, Rachael Davis…) and is embellished by a small but essential cast of some of the finest Michigan musicians, including Jason Dennie on mandolin and vocals, Drew Howard on pedal steel and dobro, the aforementioned Rachael Davis and Yellow Room Gang’s, Jan Krist on harmony vocals.
Annie’s wise and whimsical take on change, spirituality, and exuberant love is immersed in Rod''s beautiful sonic textures and instrumental prowess, making this record uniquely their own -- and their best yet.
