Kirby Criddle is not your typical prairie-born, grass-fed, apple-cheeked songstress. The twenty-three year old indie-folk singer songwriter hails from Saskatoon, and while her music is reminiscent of the fact that she makes her home in the heart of the prairies, it has its own "je ne sais quoi" that you''d be hard pressed to put your finger on. And that''s just how she likes it.
Having recently released her debut album, Vena Cava, Criddle plans to join forces with The Mark Ceaser Empire, touring Alberta in May/June 2009 and the rest of the best of the West(ern Canada) for the summer of 2009, and venturing East in October/November, exchanging home-cooked meals and cookies for a comfy place to sleep in your house! She will also spend much of the tour honing her driving capabilities, because her "tour bus" is currently a three-speed brown bicycle with a wicker basket. Cute, yes, but not very conducive to taking the world by storm.
Criddle''s music is a delightful fusion of rich, earthy vocals, raw, honest lyrics and simple, organic melodies on guitar and piano. "That soul exposed is what could warm any critic''s heart. The way she laid bare the stories behind her song endeared the audience so much you could literally see them turning their rapt attention onto this picturesque pixie sitting up on the stage with her acoustic guitar." -- Jeanette Stewart, Saskatoon Star Phoenix. She has shared the stage with artists such as Emm Gryner, Joel Plaskett, Laura Barrett (of the Hidden Cameras), The Weakerthans and Coco Love Alcorn, as well as many local talents. In 2008, she spent the summer playing various music festivals (Mortlach Berry Festival/Ness Creek/We Are Many), and was also voted second best vocalist in the Planet S Best of Saskatoon ''08 Poll. "Indie-folk singer songwriter Kirby Criddle has been creating quite a buzz lately, and that''s reflected by the fact that she''s zoomed out of nowhere to take second spot in this category." -- Chris Kirkland, Planet S.
The year has just begun, but Criddle’s long been off and running. A first-time recipient of the Saskatchewan Arts Board Independent Artist Grant, planning her second Western Canadian tour, extending her fanbase beyond the prairie homeland, and garnering much respect and recognition from her peers has made her the happiest girl in the world! “It’s not surprising that the word “unique” follows Criddle. Though the music itself is a tried and true style, Criddle’s sunshine-laden personality comes through in each recorded moment and every time she hits the stage.” -- Craig Silliphant, Planet S.
“I could sleep inside her voice; I envy whoever most often receives her late night lullabies.” I, Lion - The Neighbourhood Express. When asked what''s next, she smiles and shrugs. "Keep your eyes peeled, and ears to the ground. We''ll be seeing each other very soon."
