Details:
Chris Plavidal began Stumptone with Mike Throneberry (The Marked Men) in the musically lush landscape of Denton, Texas. Dedicated to an aesthetic that incorporates noise and ambient sound with a slightly twisted, but oddly traditional approach to songwriting, Stumptone strives to refine and redefine the boundaries of psychedelic rock.
There is no better example of this than the songs and sounds of the 2008 album Gravity Suddenly Released (Works Progress). Recorded with long-time co-conspirator David Willingham, it is a dazzling ride through the glorious breadth of what Plavidal and Stumptone have to offer.
A fine blend of sauteed psychedelic folk, stir fried in a sauce of fuzzed out heavy rock and twisted tape loopery; then embellished with a dash of smooth and silky steel guitar, and a hearty sprinkling of moog and analog electronics. Bring to a boil, and combine with multiple layers of ambient sound waves, odd percussion, and melodica in an emulsion of feedback. Finally, garnished with an unexpected spicy blast of brass and harmonica, and wedges of vocal harmonies. Served hot! Guaranteed to soothe and cajole your hungry brain.
