Trio Mirage experiments with the fusion of Eastern European folk music, jazz, and modern classical music. It was formed in 1998 when Igor Iachimciuc, at that time young but promising composer, guitar, and cimbalom performer from the Republic of Moldova, started the collaboration with two talented virtuoso folk musicians Marcel Stefanet – violin, and Cezar Cazanoi – flute. It was the common desire of all musicians to take the folk music on different level, but not destroying the essence, and beauty of it.
The hardest tusk, ingeniously solved by the musicians, was to create an organic blend of styles, rather than fragments put in a single piece. The use of percussion instruments was purposely limited to a minimum, each player contributing to the rhythmic drive either imitating percussions using specific pattern, or via a series of special effects, idiomatic for the instrument.
The result is a chamber sonority, in which each instrument can be clearly heard. Having just three instruments, the musicians could create a rich palette of colors. The texture varies from simple homophony to multi-layered polyphony, sometimes resembling Bela Bartok’s string quartets. The variety of moods is also great: from nostalgic to sarcastic, from melancholic to joyful, from song-like to dance-like. It is hard to predict the steps of the musical form, and to draw a line in between styles that musicians masterfully put together.
At the time, when trio Mirage made its appearance on the National TV of the Republic of Moldova, the public opinion was very controversial. Some loved it, others didn’t know what to say, but for some it was equal to shock. It is true that music of Trio Mirage will not satisfy every taste, but for those who would like to experience something new, it will be a discovery, because the music speaks directly to one''s heard.
Trio Mirage since 1998 influenced many musicians, and the number of funs is constantly growing.
