MP3 Chris Koza - Patterns

Something between a mountain and a valley, an ocean and a desert, the coast and the midwest... acoustic, adventerous, and familiar.

12 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Modern Folk, ROCK: Acoustic

Details:
This is the new CD, and while Exit Pesce might still be fresh in your ears, Patterns will be even fresher.

The lush arrangements and occasional samples are just a couple of the differences between Exit Pesce and the new release, Patterns, which finishes up as a more polished, moodier offering than the debut release. One music critic in the Twin Cities summarized its sound:

"Its like Beck doing Paul Simon, or Jeff Tweedy doing Brian Wilson"(Chris Reimenshneider, Minneapolis Star Tribue)

Patterns was recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, MN, with many of the songs being approached by a four-piece band to capture that intangible qualtiy that exists in musicians'' chemistry. Pachyderm is the studio where artists such as Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Soul Asylum, and also The Polyphonic Spree and Mason Jenning have recorded.

"Koza knocks the listener off balance by pairing his avant-garde lyrical inclinations with precise folk-pop melodies of a largely traditional bent delivered in a clear, pleasing tenor, recalling ’70s singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and Paul Simon in the process."
--Rob Van Alstyne, Pulse of the Twin Cities; Minneapolis, MN

"Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter Chris Koza wants you to hear his inner voice. That’s why he lets you in. Passionate lyrics sung with a determined sincerity are branded with his trademark melodies like a Wyoming steer in a weathered ranch. Backing up his vocals and acoustic guitar are a fine threesome who are more than competent musicians themselves. Threading the needle finely between indie folk and pop-rock, Koza is a musician that modern master musicians like Oberst would cite with reverence."

Some thoughts in the first person:
The song ''Patterns'' is about the circular nature of history. What will happen is in all likely hood what has already happened at some point before. I do believe that new change can happen, not in the sense that someone has a new idea, but that the mob mentality can adapt to that instead of the old stories that come around again and again.

I am happy with the recording and how everything turned out. The sequencing was just as important as anything else. The first song on the album and the last song start in similar fashion, and are meant to be bookends to a core that mixes pop sensibility with thoughtful arrangements and imaginative lyrics all around an acoustic guitar, evocative vocals and a group of skilled musicians.
