Details:
On June 1st, 2009, The Rose Colella Trio, a Chicago-based jazz group, released their debut album entitled “Small Hours.” Featuring Rose Colella on vocals, Dan Effland on guitar and Joe Policastro on bass, the album is comprised of the trio’s own unique arrangements of eleven classic jazz standards including “Blossom’s Blues,” written by the recently departed Blossom Dearie, to whom the trio paid tribute at Katerina’s last March.
“Any excuse to hear a tribute to one of jazz''s most underrated, unpretentious vocalists we''ll take. And to their credit, vocalist Colella and guitarist Dan Effland do a darn good job resurrecting Dearie''s work, especially in the hands-off approach they take to the recently departed singer''s unadorned arrangements.” - Time Out Chicago
“Small Hours” was recorded in the Summer of 2008 upon the trio’s completion of a month-long engagement at the popular downtown Chicago jazz club, Pops for Champagne. Policastro had just returned from a year-long residency in Germany to join Colella and Effland, who had been playing duo together for several years. Enthusiastic audiences returned to Pops week after week as the trio featured the songs that would soon appear on their debut recording.
Lola Bard Productions represents the trio and is owned by Colella, who named the company after her grandmother, a 1930’s vocalist who recorded with Bobby Hackett and The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The trio is scheduled for two official CD Release parties in June, including Thursday, June 25th at Pops for Champagne as well as Friday, June 26th at Katerina’s.
