Along with the birth of the “Gospel-soul” style of singing in the late 50’s and early 60’s, came the birth of countless Southeastern “garage” bands--both segregated and integrated--who contributed some of the finest recordings ever put to wax. Even as The Beatles held the music world hostage at large, by the mid ‘60’s, bands coalesced in the South purely to emulate the sounds of Otis Redding, Arthur Alexander, Jerry Butler, Billy Stewart, The Impressions, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Little Anthony & Imperials and countless other “national spotlight soul ” artists of the day. Many covered the well-known hits of their idols, but there was an astounding amount of originality exhibited in song writing and arranging as well. It is a safe bet to say that many of the tunes found in this fine series, would have been “national” hit recordings as well had they been represented by major labels that could have provided the proper exposure and promotion. Even so, many of the songs in these compilations have become highly prized collectors'' items all around the globe, as hard core soul aficionados search out original pressings of the tunes, and pay big bucks to do so. Proof is in the puddin’, as the old saying goes, and the amazing popularity of this music today speaks for itself. Check out all volumes of “Rare Southern Soul”, and enjoy a priceless slice of life that is long gone, but certainly not forgotten.
