The artists of Gumbo have been active musicians for more than 40 years, but Gumbo as a group was started by Sid Beam in the summer of 2004. When Joe Casprowiak and Sid, who were then neighbors, bumped into each other on the street, Sid asked him if he wanted to play some music on a casual basis for the coffee houses. They got David Fournier into the Gumbo experiment, and together they have created an upbeat, engaging show with a loyal local following. It was started as, and still remains, something they do for fun and the love of the music. As Sid says, "We don''t have anything to prove to anybody; we''re too old for that, and we all love playing the old styles as well as the original compositions, and singing harmony." So Gumbo has managed to stumble into what often remains elusive to most bands, and that is, good musical chemistry, without most of the ego trips which end up destroying so many musical organizations.
