Starfunk and the Renegade Lightning Production is the ongoing solo project of me, Brian Stark, former bassist and composer in semi-legendary underground Denton bands Grasshopper’s Dying Words, Dalom, Eight Hundred Pounds, and the Dave Sorrendino Band. While I have recorded many of my original songs before for various purposes (and with various different groups), “Boxers on the Outside” is my first official release of exclusively original material.
Recorded in my bedroom and a few other people’s living rooms, “Boxers on the Outside” is a collection of material written in the past six years, mostly performed by myself. I was trying to make a record that sounds big and deep, like the Flaming Lips albums from the last decade, or the last album by the Comas (“Spells“), or Radiohead when they feel like rocking out. I think that these songs have a strong emotional core that appeals the search for love and meaning, a longing inherent in human nature. I also think that they rock really hard, without compromising my love of melody, harmony, and well-considered arrangements. But mostly they rock really hard. You should listen to it and tell me what you think!
Making this album has been a long, arduous journey, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of friends and the contributions of the great musicians who also played on this album: Julia Sokolowska, Gilberto Contreras, John Guari, Jeremy Sparks, and 800 Lbs. members Carrie Legner and Tristan Shinnick. I need to give special credit to Casey Williams, who contributed the beautiful artwork for the front and back covers.
