Ottawa-born pianist, composer and educator Matt Newton has been working as a professional musician since the tender age of seventeen. Having begun studying piano at age seven, he continued his musical education at the prestigious Canterbury High School for the Performing Arts. While still in High School, Matt was twice chosen to be part of the Yamaha All-Star Band at MusicFest Canada. In his graduating year, he was the recipient of the Bill Shuttleworth Scholarship, which is awarded by the Ottawa International Jazz Festival. In 2000, Matt received the Spirit of the Capital Youth Award for the Arts. Matt graduated from the University of Toronto Jazz Program in 2004, and in 2006 he attended The Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, which was led by noted New York City based trumpeter, Dave Douglas. During Matt`s tenure at U of T he was privileged to study privately with jazz piano icon Gary Williamson and JUNO Award winner, David Braid. Based in Toronto Matt has had the opportunity to perform with many respected musicians on the Canadian and International jazz scene, including Kevin Brow, Rob Mosher, Kevin Turcotte, Jim Vivian, Mike Malone, Pat Collins, Mike Milligan and Norman Marshall Villeneuve. He has appeared numerous times at top Toronto jazz venues, such as The Montreal Bistro, Healy`s, Gate 403 and in Ottawa, Cafe Paradiso, Avant-Garde Bar and Rainbow Bistro. Matt has also appeared at The Fallsview Casino (as a solo piano opening act for rock-icon Burton Cummings) at an array of jazz festivals, including the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, the TD Toronto International Jazz Festival, The Distillery Jazz Festival, The Beaches International Jazz Festival and the Art of Jazz event. Two recent recordings of note include his work on vocalist Karen Manion`s Live at The Montreal Bistro and noted jazz guitarist Harley Card`s well-received Non-Fiction.
