Details:
"the group blends many diverse elements into a fascinating sound...eloquent piano lines...highly expressive bass...rampaging trumpet...a "funky reggae" interlude with Goodrick''s lines darting around...a "sneaky-snaky" rhythm and a tenor sax solo from guest George Garzone that is both sly and fiery...Some listeners may wonder how to categorize this recording; file under "good music." - Richard Kamins, Hartford Courant

“American Waltz” features sterling guest turns by jazz masters George Garzone and Mick Goodrick. Garzone’s blazing tenor saxophone cuts through “Buttah”, Rosen’s twisted reworking of a Sonny Rollins classic. George also joins the fray on “Be A Battery”, a wild free-improv romp off of a rollicking high-energy melody, inspired by beat poet Ann Waldman’s poem, “Battery”.

Goodrick’s sweet and fragile guitar lines fill the spaces on the title track, “American Waltz”, an ode to folk-rock jams. Later, Mick unleashes the weirdness on “Bulletrain”, an extended space-jam, which morphs into a slow serpentine funk tune. Startling solos, fat grooves, and uncharted territory.

“American Waltz”, the debut CD of this Boston-based quartet, bears the fruit of countless hours of group explorations. Indeed, the roots of 3play+ took hold in a casual neighborhood jam session – the connection was exhilarating and it became the jam that wouldn’t stop. Through these sessions, a band grew organically, without anyone quite realizing it...

Counterpart to the improvisations are the singular genre-bending compositions of co-leader Josh Rosen. Rosen uses his unique compositional style to tell musical stories and boldly mixes and mashes his wide range of influences.

Co-lead by Rosen and bassist Molinari, 3play added the plus-sign with guest performances by jazz legends Garzone and Goodrick, trumpeter Greg Hopkins, guitarist Jon Damian, and saxophonists Alan Chase and Russ Gershon. 3play+ also has engaged some of Boston and New York’s most cutting-edge rising stars such as Jeremy Udden, Dino Govoni, Curt Newton, Adam Sturtevant, and Dave Fox.

Ultimately, the band found its soul mates in Phil Grenadier and Marcello Pellitteri.

Grenadier’s unique sound and approach make a perfect match. His “luminous free-flowing constructs” emanate from a concept based on listening and taking chances, never falling into predictable licks, always searching and vulnerable. 3play+ is all about the group and Phil is a soloist who never leaves the band behind, who loves the interplay and collective improvisations.

Originally from San Francisco, Grenadier is an internationally renowned artist who has worked with countless great musicians including John Scofield (2007-8 World Tour), Kenny Barron, Anthony Braxton, Jaco Pastorius, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Steve Swallow, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Billy Hart, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald, Esperanza Spalding, Dionne Warwick, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Carlos Santana, and James Brown. He has two acclaimed CDs as a leader (Fresh Sound New Talent) and has performed on over 50 recordings as a sideman.

A versatile, in-demand virtuoso, Marcello Pellitteri is an amazing improviser, with remarkable ears and instantaneous response. He’s the broiling underside of 3play+, driving the rhythm, keenly aware, listening, in the moment, and perfectly responsive to the shifting soundscapes of the band.

Pellitteri has performed with John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Kenny Barron, Joe Henderson, Jon Hendricks, The Gipsy Kings, New York Voices, Woody Shaw, Paquito D''Rivera and Wynton Marsalis. His credits include over 50 recordings with Michael Brecker, John Abercrombie, Eddie Gomez, Dave Liebman, Danilo Perez, Mulgrew Miller, and Miroslav Vitous. He has appeared with world-class orchestras and on numerous television shows.

Bassist Lello Molinari, noted for his “ferocious, metronomic intensity” and adventurous spirit, has a startling “role-reversal” approach to his instrument: yes, the bass is the bass, but it can also be the melody! Refusing to be a mere timekeeper, Molinari expands the possibilities for his instrument and for the band, especially through his melodic interplay.

Molinari has produced three exceptional CDs as a leader (Accurate Records, Splash) featuring such artists as Frank Carlberg, Bob Gullotti, and Chiara Civello, in addition to Garzone and Goodrick. He has performed with The Either/Orchestra, Jerry Bergonzi, Kenny Wheeler, Joe Diorio, Victor Lewis, Dominique Eade, Greg Burk, Rick DiMuzio, Garrison Fewell, and Lisa Thorson.

Pianist and composer Josh Rosen “evokes a refreshingly relaxed openness…yet burns with the best.” (Performer Magazine). His daring grasp of a wide spectrum of expression fuels this band. His compositions are open, burning, folky, funky, hard, easy, dissonant, triadic.

Rosen has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists including Bob Moses, Dennis Irwin, Mike Formanek, John Lockwood, Steve Slagle, Bennie Wallace, Mae Arnette, Bruno Raberg, George Schuller, Mulatu Astake, Alemayehu Eshete, Mahmoud Ahmed, and Ben Wittman, among others. In 2008, he participated on the release of Mindia Devi Klein’s Indonesian-Jazz project, Folk icon Dean Stevens latest release, a new recording with Ethiopian master musician Mulatu Astake, and a duet recording project with multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Stan Strickland. In addition, Rosen joined three new projects: Dave Fox’s Adventures in Sound, featuring wildman guitarist Dave Tronzo; Bangalore, a Raga-Groove Band, and The Infinite Ensemble. Last summer’s tour with Ethiopiques and The Either/Orchestra, included performances at Ireland’s Festival of World Cultures and New York City’s Lincoln Center Outdoors.
