Bio: Edward and Harding

Don Edward Owen and Bill Harding Candy were friends at Gordon Graydon High School, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada in the 60’s, each having their own bands, The Fabulous Fables and The Soundbenders respectively . They formed The Change in Time and played a lot of Beatles, who, Stones and the like (British invasion).
When the folk scene arrived they dropped their electric guitars for acoustics and formed Edward and Harding. Their 1st gig was a high school assembly fundraiser. They went on to do high school concerts, dances and frat parties as well as festivals opening for the likes of Lighthouse and Rush. Rush actually opened for them at their High school. They played in the boy’s gym at Graydon and E&H played the girls gym. To the larger audience of course. Who knew where they were headed.
They opened in Calgary for the Stampeders who were flogging their hit Sweet City Woman.
After high school their management co. got them a 2 album deal with Quality records and had a minor hit with a Don Owen song Mr. Sunlight
Keyboardist Bill McLean who had his band at Graydon as well, The Freedom Sound, who still get together for fun, joined Don and Bill in 1973. Edward Harding and Mclean embarked on a 20 plus year career playing clubs, concerts, radio and TV. In Mississauga they were regulars at the Fritter Fest in Port Credit and played the 3 Crowns on Dundas (now the Cork and ??) for many years. They even played a house party for Harold Shipp’s birthday. They began as a vocal trio doing a lot of Crosby, Stills and Nash and America type material which got them noticed by an American agent who set them up touring campuses in the states where they shared stages with The Guess Who (American Woman tour) Jerry-Jeff Walker (Mr. Bojangles), David Brenner (comic when used to host the Johnny Cason Show occasionally), Billy Crystal and the yet undiscovered Jim Carrey at a university showcase. They discovered the vocal music of the swing era and began massing a repertoire of songs from The Mills Bros., Glen Miller, The Andrew sisters etc. and became well known for their slick vocals and were able to play live on radio and TV with just one guitar or many times with a full studio band. Signature songs were The Java Jive (Ink Spots) and Mack The Knife (Bobby Darrin). (they got to know many great jazz musicians like Moe Koffman (Swinging Shepherd Blues, who booked them is his popular jazz club George’s Spaghetti House) and Rob McConnell (The Boss Brass). EH & M were regulars at CBC radio playing on Morningside (with hosts Harry Brown, Don Herron and Peter Gzowski) many times and were regulars on the daytime variety show The Bob McLean Show. A highlight was going to Disney World to tape a CBC Superspecial with Rene Simard, and Ryan’s Fancy (East coast Irish group)
They also opened for female impersonator Jim Bailey at the O’Keefe Center (now The Hummingbird Center or maybe it has another name now.)They did other openings for Ronnie Hawkins and Chilliwack but their biggest show was opening for Blood Sweat and Tears (Just after David Clayton Thomas left) at The Forum in Ontario Place. (now The Molson Amphitheater) It was a packed show (10,000) who gave the boys a standing O for there CS& N medley. It was taped for radio by CBC and when aired EH&M got 35mins and BS&T got 25 for the 1 hr show. They did CBC’s 1st full length transcription album called Now and Then and went on to produce there own self titled album.
They did spots on the Kenny Rogers TV Show sharing the stage with Lynda Ronstadt and BB King. as well.
There was a CBC TV series called Whose New and the group co-hosted 13 shows out of Windsor.
Bill is still performing and writing with 2 CD’s to his credit “Closer To The Music” 1995 and “Common Ground” 2002. (Living in Miss.)
Don opened a restaurant, “The Oasis Bar and Grill” in Cobourg.
