This song is dedicated to General Romeo Dallaire, Carl Wilkens and many other Rwandans who sacrificed their lives and had the courage to stay in the country and sacrifice their lives for the people of Rwanda.
The story behind the song
What could I give as a gift to the people of Rwanda? I thought that one of the most meaningful things would be to write a song about the 1994 Genocide and let them know that people are still grieving with them and have not forgotten those events . The song “Sleep My Child” was written in 2008. The stunning vocals of Calgary’s Candace Lacina and the touch of Torontos’s Piano genius Tom Yu brought this song to another level. Upon arrival in Rwanda, I had a meeting with the director of the Kigali Memorial Centre, Freddie Mutuhgaha and I gave the song to him which was translated into Kinyarwanda by Jean Francois Gisimba. The centre along with Aegis trust graciously offered to pay for the recording of this song into Kinyarwandan by two local artists who are well known among Genocide Survivors- Miss Chanel and Munyanshoza Diudonne.
Freddie Mutuhgaha was able to get an interview on Contact FM with Miss Chanel and I, where we had discussions about how music can be used to bring reconilliation. It was very ironic that Radio was used to perpetuate the genocide and now is being used as a tool for reconcillaition. I was also interviewed by Radio Rwanda and was able to share the song with them.
I am a lover of world music. Indeed, we all sing in a different language but music transcends those barriers and gives us a glimpse into the beauty of that particular culture and people! Although the song I wrote is very contemplative and reflective it is my goal to write songs for Rwanda with themes of hope, joy and peace…characteristics that I see in Rwanda today…What a beautiful people! What a beautiful country! Rwanda!!!
