Born in South London and living in Brighton, Jez Tonkin has been playing on Brighton’s local music scene since the early eighties. He began singing and composing songs in indie and folk rock bands, developing a style of his own. Later becoming a solo performer, his rich acoustic music draws on influences such as Richard Thompson, REM, Nick Drake, John Martyn, James Yorkston and Elvis Costello. He has performed at many different venues such as the prestigious 12 Bar Club in Denmark St, London, the Waterman Arts Centre in Richmond, the Rock Garden, the Greys and the Evening Star in Brighton, as well as abroad in Germany. He recently played with Will Gaines at the Chlore Ballroom and Purcell Room, at the South Bank Centre. This CD, ‘A Cathedral Sky’, won praise from Clive Carroll, one of the UK’s foremost acoustic guitarists.
