Details:
2003. Manchester Apollo. The White Stripes live in concert. Somewhere in the crowd Rachel and Luke O’Hanlon meet for the first time. Shouting to hear each other over the music, they talk excitedly about books, movies, poetry; the secondary school it turns out they both attended at the same time without knowing; and music. They talk about The Beatles and they talk about Dylan. They talk about Son House’s growl; Bo Diddley’s groove and Sister Rosetta’s guitar. They talk about Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny’s voice and The Pogues and Shane MacGowan’s voice. They talk about the songs they first loved and the songs that first made them dance and the songs that first made them cry. Rachel tells Luke she’s a singer. Luke tells Rachel he writes songs. He wants to tell her that he quite fancies her and does she want to go for a drink but he doesn’t mention that. He just tells her he writes songs. Oh, and he wants to put a band together.
2009. Liverpool. The Bottletop Millionaires release their first album. Eleven songs for people to cry to and dance to and love, like all those splendid bastards that Rachel and Luke spoke about six years earlier. They’re joined now by old friends: Chris Ball, tight and steady on bass; Harry Percy, crisp snare rhythms like a fast train; Martin Reid, grinding organ like an old time revival. Rachel sings and plays the mandolin. Luke sings and plays the guitar. They sing angrily about engines that are out of control and getting faster and what the hell do they do anyhow? They sing mournfully about parties they can’t go back to. They sing about stones in your shoe and they sing about cities falling down and they sing about the end of the world. Sometimes, they’ve no idea what they’re singing about. But they sing it just the same. Honest and direct and true.
So here it is: ‘The Strange Cargo Cult of the Bottletop Millionaires’. Their first album. Luke asked Rachel out for a drink in the end. Then he asked her out for another. Then he asked her to marry him. She said yes. And amongst all that, this record got made. Enjoy.
