Details:
Kick Kick is an American psychedelic, powerpop band from Shawnee, Kansas (aka “Bossland”). The current members include Jared “JB Kick” White (guitar, keyboards, vocals), C.J. “Star Boss” Rooney (guitar, vocals), Jeff “Flashy Thundercat” Nelson (tambourine, shakers, vocals) and Joe “Handsome Horse” Wilner (drums). Though their personal influences are varied, Kick Kick’s sound is reminiscent of the 1960s’ swagger of The Rolling Stones, melodies of the Beach Boys, and edginess of The Clash.
History
Kick Kick followed an earlier musical songwriting project in 2006 call Manhoney. Percy “Manhoney” Hankins was the first character and collaboration of Kick Kick’s songwriters, Chris Rooney and Jared White. Rooney and White pieced together the first Manhoney song “Lay By the Fire”, as well as a collection of other songs, with samples and original lyrics for an early jab at Myspace Music exposure.
Kick Kick officially formed in 2007 when Rooney and Joe Wilner wrote songs while living together in Shawnee. White agreed to play and record with them mid 2007. The first official Kick Kick tracks “Cadillac Lips” and “Rocky Road” were recorded in Rooney and Wilner’s townhouse on a digital Tascam 8-Track PortaStudio featuring Rooney on vocals and rhythm guitar while White played the remainder of the music on a Fantom x-6 synthesizer. “Cadillac Lips” was later re-recorded to include Wilner on drums and White’s long-time friend, Jeff Nelson, for the release of Kick Kick’s first collection of songs, Greatest Kicks.
The Myspace Phenomenon
Greatest Kicks, an album made from a selection of White and Rooney’s songs, was the first, demo of Kick Kick’s greatest hits. It was available in 2008 via Myspace Music and quickly gained international recognition. Along with a new package of Kick Kick aliases and vocabulary including “Baller”, “Boss” and “Kick-Horses” (their female fans), Kick Kick raised the bar for what success a Myspace band could achieve.
Following the recording of Greatest Kicks, Kick Kick played their first show in early 2008 during an evening Walk-A-Thon for Cancer Research at the University of Kansas’ Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas. Two of the band’s friends, Kris Losure (bass) and Chad Coolidge (guitar) played with them. Losure also played bass during the studio recording of “Splinters in Your Fingertips” for Powerplay.
With many more songs written, some live playing exposure and requests from international radio stations, Kick Kick recorded their second album, Powerplay, the summer of 2008. They chose Justin Mantooth, a hip hop/rock engineer, to oversee the recording and mixing process. With one session recorded at Ashland Studios in Independence, MO, one in KC Recordings in Shawnee, KS, they settled in Westend Studios in Kansas City, MO. Powerplay, named after a “baller’s journey across the country of his own mind” is a coming of age album featuring their first singles, “Throw Your Heart Over the Bar”, “Sexy, Money, Power” and “American Party”.
