Details:
In August 2005, Submodern was invited to perform their spacey electronic music in Center Camp at the Burning Man Festival, a week-long experiment and experience that draws tens of thousands of people every year out to the middle of nowhere in the Nevada desert. There was only one stipulation for their sets: no drum machine beats. Rising to the challenge, they stripped away their beloved beats and blips, slowed down the synthesizer sequences, reworked the melodies, tripped out the effects, and shoehorned it all into a portable rig that could be transported across the dusty makeshift roads of the playa. They ended up with an even spacier, even more introspective hour-long set of freeform, beatless electronic music that fit in perfectly with the theme for that year''s festival of "Psyche: The Conscious, the Subconscious and the Unconscious".
Nearly four years later, Submodern is releasing "Slowburn", a studio version of that same live electronic music, with some of the beats snuck back in. Drawn from the same synthesizer loops and sequences that were originally played during late nights and early mornings on Burning Man''s dusty, desolate Nevada playa, "Slowburn" takes those introspective ambient grooves a little further by supplementing them with a studio full of old analog effects and classic electronic drum machines. The result is something along the lines of classic, mid-90''s melodic electronic listening music like Orbital "Brown", Global Communications "76:14", Plaid "Restproof Clockwork" and Ulrich Schnauss "Faraway Trains Passing By"... catchy, beautiful music focused on melody and rhythm more than esoteric digital manipulation techniques, but with enough unexpected left turns to keep your brain properly tickled and interested.
Two and a half years in the making, "Slowburn" represents the sound and feel of Submodern''s Burning Man live ambient set, meticulously perfected and subtly enhanced in the studio.
