Aptly enough, a marriage brought SayLovey together. In fall 2006, longtime Minneapolis bandmates Jessie Bryan, Jill Bartyzal and B.T. Hanson were invited to perform jazz for a friend''s wedding. The trio called upon the expertise of guitarist and former collaborator Nick Haas to bring the true jazz element to the event. The reception went s''wonderful, and SayLovey was born.
Steady work came quickly for the newly formed quartet, first with weekly gigs at Nochee in the Minneapolis Mill District (since replaced by Harry''s Food and Cocktails). Next in line were the Dakota Restaurant and Jazz Club, the Guthrie Theater lounge, and a medley of other local hotspots.
In just two years, SayLovey has sealed its rightful place in the Twin Cities music scene. Each member brings diverse experience in hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, pop and rock to the jazz genre, resulting in a classic-meets-unconventional sound. Creative influences range from Dave Brubeck to Miles Davis, Astrud Gilberto to Erykah Badu, and Morphine to Mendelssohn—while Portuguese, French and Spanish lyrics round out the band''s eclectic flavor.
SayLovey is bringing in the new year with a new CD, appropriately titled Such Is Life. The recording is a memoriam to Bryan''s brother, Johnny B., who was killed in a car accident in May 2008. Included are five Haas/Bryan originals, a few tasty traditional gems, and a reworking of "Aquarela do Brasil". In a fitting tribute, the celebration was held on the eve of what would have been Johnny B''s 28th birthday.
