Lochs/Balthaus/Herskedal is a unique modern creative jazz trio. Dutch trumpetplayer Bert Lochs and German/Dutch pianoplayer Dirk Balthaus go back a long way. They know each other for twenty years and played and recorded together many times. Lochs wanted to renew the musical co-operation with one of his favorite pianoplayers and good friend, and thought of the Norwegian tubaplayer Daniel Herskedal to complete the band. He saw this young tuba virtuoso on the Hoeilaert Festival. Lochs was a finalist in the international composition contest in 2004, and Heskedal had just won the band competition of this festival with his band Listen. When Lochs saw what this tubaplayer was capable of, he never forgot, and November 2008, when plans started to come to make a new recording with Balthaus, Herskedal was a logical choice. The music is mostly writtten by Bert Lochs, but Balthaus and Herskedal contribute to the repertoire with exciting new pieces. In January 2009 they rehearsed for the first time and a month later they recorded their first CD in the German studio Fattoria Musica. In the beginnig of May they were invited to play a Showcase ‘artists deserving wider recognition’ on the Dutch Day of Jazz, and they had their first little tour.
