Touisset Point is a conceptual CD which has been long in the making. Thorsten Wagner and Peter Gresch first collaborated on their stylistic blend of free-form and minimalism 25 years ago in Dortmund, Germany, a project which found a new vitality after their paths began to converge again in the summer of 2008 during Thorsten Wagner’s stay on Touisset Point, Peter''s home for over ten years. Joined now by bassist Alex Morsey, they recorded seven tracks in January 2009 in which their continued quest for musical expression and a subtle, if not at times ironic, melancholy find poignant expression.
Handling the anatomy of music with loving playfulness, the trio frequently layers rhythms seemingly independent from one another, melodic phrases effortlessly weaving in and out of harmonic boundaries. The most striking effect though of these largely improvised pieces is the breath between the statements and the unaffected simplicity with which they are laid out. It is not a style aiming to impress with dissonances, explosive outbursts and non-formalist posturing. Like a congenial fellow traveler, the music always remains a dialogue. Along the way, it references the musicians'' experiences, embracing the musical past, rather than trying, in a sense, to overcome it. On the whole, Touisset Point''s focus stays on the group''s lyricism, and alternates between quiet intensity and what may be referred to as “minimalistischer Schönklang” – minimalistic beauty.
