VISIONS

A new release from Bassist Marion Hayden

VISIONS, is a well balanced menu of jazz classics and
original compositions, some free wheeling swing, latin, and balladry-
all deftly anchored by the powerful bass of Marion Hayden.

Hayden leads an elite ensemble of musicians featuring:
Kirk Lightsey-piano, Steve Turre-trombone,
Cecil Bridgewater- trumpet, Ralph Peterson- drums,
Wendell Harrison-saxophone and Rob Pipho- vibes.

Each piece on the release represents the essence of the
genre and draws the listener in. Mr. Kenyatta and Buhaina
set the pace for the album with a swing that bounces
enough to dance to and full tilt soloing. Destiny is a
beautiful homage to rhythmic songs such as “Poinciana”.
Hayden brings her classical training forward with
lush bow work on These Foolish Things. The record
date is enriched with originals such as Hayden’s
Sumpin’ Like Dat-and Lightsey’s Heaven Dance
. VISIONS is a tour-de-force of jazz music woven
tightly by the bonds of the bass!

Marion Hayden is part of a tradition of innovative and influential musicians hailing from Detroit, Michigan.

Hayden’s skill as a jazz and popular artist were first honed at the age of 15 as a student of master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave- with whom she is still regularly featured. Her early tour experiences were with drummer/composer Roy Brooks’ Aboriginal Percussion Choir and Artistic Truth ensembles. This was followed by a stint in the house rhythm section for Dummy George jazz club in Detroit- a legendary Detroit jazz house featuring touring artists such as: Art Farmer, Marlena Shaw, Charles McPherson, and Johnny Hartman . A short list of Hayden’s performance credits includes James Carter, Donald Byrd, Benny Golson, Frank Foster, Hank Jones, Kevin Mahogany, Howard Johnson, Regina Carter, Nicholas Payton, Geri Allen, Charles McPherson , Nancy Wilson, Barry Harris , Johnny O’Neal, Alvin Waddles and David “Fathead” Newman. She is a co-founder of the recording group Straight Ahead.

Hayden’s acumen as a composer has been recognized with several composition commissions and awards. Recent works include a sacred program based on the biblical story of Ruth and a musical suite based on the life of the slave poet Phyllis Wheatley.
Collaboration projects include a March 2009 debut in Bremen, Germany of original compositions for bass and saxophone to accompany the works of renown poet/scholar Melba Boyd. Hayden is currently on the faculty of the Jazz Studies Department at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Campus and is King/Chavez/Parks Visiting Professor at University of Michigan, Dearborn Campus.

Though steeped in the jazz tradition, Hayden’s musical concept is wide open.. She has recorded and performed with the Funk Brothers (Motown’s award winning session band), Ivory Coast guitarist Loba Aku, neo-soul artist Malik Alston , Italian concert accordionist Peter Soave and The New Millennium Gospel Choir.

One of a growing number of artists who have chosen environs outside of the jazz mecca of New York City as home, Marion Hayden has begun to carve out a niche for herself as a musician of considerable gifts. She is a first call bassist and an artist of increasing international notoriety.
