Saxophonist Hailey Niswanger is a 2008 graduate of West Linn High School near Portland, Oregon. In addition to playing saxophone and clarinet in her high school jazz and symphonic bands, Hailey was a member of Thara Memory’s elite Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra and Combo, and headlines her own jazz quartet. Hailey’s combo has performed at the Portland Jazz Festival, Jimmy Mak’s Jazz Club, Mt. Hood Jazz Festival and various other jazz venues around Portland.
Only nineteen years old, Hailey has an impressive list of accomplishments that stretch far beyond Portland, Oregon. In both 2006 and 2007, Hailey received
scholarships to attend the Berklee College of Music Summer Jazz Workshop in Boston under the direction of Terri Lyne Carrington. She performed at the 2007 IAJE conference in New York with the Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra and Combo.
As a member of the 2007 Vail Jazz Workshop under the direction of John and Jeff Clayton, Hailey performed on the main stage with Taylor Eigsti. Later that year, Eigsti invited her to appear with him at Jazz Alley in Seattle.
In both 2007 and 2008, Hailey performed with the Gibson/Baldwin GRAMMY Jazz Ensemble in Hollywood and the Jazz Band of America in Indianapolis. In 2007, she performed at the pre-festival events for the 50th Anniversary Monterey Jazz Festival with the Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra. In the summer of 2008, Hailey toured with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, including a performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Holland, and on the main stage of the 51st Monterey Jazz Festival.
Hailey won the 2008 Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Saxophone Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. She will be a featured artist at the Women in Jazz Festival on May 15, 2009.
Hailey has enjoyed sharing the stage with many great jazz artists including: George Duke, George Garzone, Red Holloway, Terell Stafford, Phil Woods, James Moody, Steve Nelson, Taylor Eigsti, Christian McBride, McCoy Tyner, Maceo Parker, and Wynton Marsalis. Hailey is currently studying jazz performance at the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full scholarship.
