-End End Of Ego-

In the year 2024 all original ideas will have ceased to exist. There will be nothing more to invent. Nothing left to think of. Every movie, every book, every record, every such and such, every this and every that will have already been thought of and created. In a flurry of scarce materials and poor workmanship, the last of the remaining such''s and that''s were thrust into the hungry jaws of the consumers.

Which, coincedentally, were too busy programming robots to walk the dogs, water the lawns, and take the children to school to notice that the last of their remaining ideas had thus flown the coop.

Technically speaking, mankind had run out of ideas in the year 1979, but it took until 2024 to create physical, working copies of the ideas that had already been thought of. Of course, things could always be improved upon, but what sort of testiment is that? The whole of human history could be pathetically summed up in a single sentence.

"We improved and improved and improved on things we already had."

The last original idea, by the way, was a concept for a movie. It stared one man, standing in a white room for the entirety of the film. Every few minutes he would open his mouth ever so slightly as if to say something direly important, but then would close it, mabye feeling that those were not the correct words to use for such a situation.

How he teased them! The audience hung on every word the actor never said.

After nearly 190 minutes of pure silence, the end of the movie had arrived. The audience could hardly contain themselves. The actor looked around the theatre from his projected screen, and opened his mouth for the last time.

"I am..."

No sooner did the words escape the actors lips, the screen froze black, ran its credits, and the flood lights in the theatre room came on. Ushering the audience into the aisles, out the doors, and into their cars.

How desperate we will have become for hope. People stayed in the theatre for hours after, waiting to see if the actor would come back to tell them whatever it was he had been thinking.

He never did.
