Details:
Singer-songwriter Laura Doherty has made her mark on the Chicago folk music scene. A resident guitar instructor at the nation''s largest folk music school, The Old Town School of Folk Music, Laura has been teaching and performing in Chicago for several years. Her "girl-next-door" lyrics and catchy melodies shine through on her debut recording Days Without Maps, produced by Ralph Covert, leader of the Chicago-based band the Bad Examples. The CD features various musicians from Chicago''s Old Town School of Folk Music including Ralph Covert, Anne-Marie Akin, nationally renowned banjo player Michael Miles; and from the former Bad Examples, Ron Barnes and Pickles Piekarski

Stretching beyond the genre of folk music, Laura mixes in jazz and rock in a contemporary style that is all her own.

Laura has played to sold-out crowds at The Old Town School of Folk Music, to large festival audiences, and in many clubs throughout Chicago, including Schuba''s Tavern, Uncommon Ground, the Hideout, the Elbo Room, Heartland Café, Abbey Pub, the Chicago Cultural Center and others. She was also a featured guest artist on Chicago''s WLUW-FM radio program, Live at the Heartland Café.

A LITTLE HISTORY...
The Beatles tune Run For Your Life was Laura''s first introduction to the guitar at the age of 16. She honed her guitar skills at the University of Dayton, playing everywhere from Dayton''s Canal Street Tavern to landing a spot in city''s popular GuitarFest. A native of New York, Laura settled in Chicago in 1992, performing in coffeehouse and clubs all over the city.

At the Old Town School, Laura manages and teaches in the wildly popular music program for toddlers called Wiggleworms™. Laura is a featured artist on the Songs for Wiggleworms children''s CD, released in August 2000.

REVIEW:
Melissa Adams is BellaOnline''s Emerging Music Host
I had the opportunity to hear Laura live at a local Chicago coffee house. It was one of those nights when I was really there to hear another performer. And, while chatting in the other room, Laura''s voice wafted into my auditory consciousness. I was only able to catch the tail end of her set. But, In those few minutes, I was enchanted. The voice is easy on the ears, understated but direct, not in your face, but not a bit shy, a nice balance. The album is largely the woman and her guitar. However, extras are added in the right amounts to achieve a professional production that showcases Laura''s songwriting and performance talent most effectively. I won''t try to slot the genre, but if you like high quality acoustic style music with rich lyrics, this one''s for you! My picks: "It''s Too Late" and "Remote Control."
