JIMMY D. ROBINSON
BIOGRAPHY
Jimmy D Robinson, a native of West Palm Beach, FL, is a self-proclaimed “perpetual club kid” and is quickly being referred to these days, in certain circles, as the new music impresario on the block. With two Billboard and UK club hits already under his belt, Robinson’s recent foray into the dance world has been a stroke of genius and luck for the poet, lyricist, musician, producer and entrepreneur. With over sixteen self-penned books of poetry to draw inspiration from, for other recording artists and genres of music, Jimmy D Robinson’s star is just beginning to shine.
The son of a single mom who waited tables to support the family, Robinson felt the unfortunate tribulations of poverty but escaped his reality through all things artistic. Robinson’s arty background began as a small child when his grandmother began teaching him to write poetry. Growing up in the West Palm Beach sunshine also provided Robinson with so many free outdoor creative outlets such as modern art, local music and dance.
During his early teen years, Jimmy D Robinson’s most memorable escape was Disco; the colorful and happy dance music of the time. He cites artists Donna Summer and Michael Jackson as being the most influential and exciting acts he recalls. Robinson often loved to visit New York City and hit up all the big dance clubs and hang around the DJ booths getting the latest scoops on what’s hot in clubland.
After Robinson attended Palm Beach Junior College a few semesters, he decided formal education was not for him and , on a whim, moved with a friend to Columbus, Ohio. While in Ohio he discovered his love of the culinary world and studied all he could about the art of cooking. Eventually, Robinson moved to Paris, France in 1990, where he studied at the Ritz Escoffier Culinary School.
Even though Robinson loved expressing himself through cooking, he soon grew weary of the culinary business world. Feeling lost, a special creative talent inside his soul begged to be unleashed but remained trapped and hidden. Unable to find himself artistically, Robinson, struggled to identify his path in life. Ultimately, Robinson found himself back in West Palm Beach, Florida, experiencing a period of homelessness, drug abuse, jail and hopelessness throughout the ‘90s.
Full of despair, destitute, and homeless, Jimmy D. Robinson began creating descriptive sentences in his mind and then penning them on scraps of paper or anything he could find. Much of the poetry in his books was written during these times. Gazing at the moon, the stars, the clouds, the sun, searching for anything that would give him hope—hope to live, to overcome, and to triumph. It can be said that poetry saved Mr. Robinson''s life, for when he began writing, he was overwhelmed with feelings that he hadn''t experienced in a long time. Poetry made him reflect and look inward and gradually, he found the more he wrote, the better he felt. It was never his intention to be a poet; he just did what came naturally. By publishing his books, Jimmy Robinson wants his readers to know that no matter what depths one can sink to, there is always a chance for change. His came in the form of the written word, for others it may be another creative force, but be assured that in every living human being there is always a chance to hope and to change.
Robinson’s works have earned him a sterling reputation in the world of publishing and music. Widely recognized as one of today’s most prolific writers, Robinson’s poems, musical stories, and lyrics reflect the hardships he has endured and the triumphs overcoming them. Penning his words with stark reality—writing of the human condition—loneliness, love, desperation, and hope, Robinson uses his craft to convey his celebration of life. For several years, Robinson’s highly praised poetry books have been gifted to presenters and nominees at the Grammy® Awards, the Radio Music Awards, the American Music Awards, and the Latin Grammy® Awards.
Jimmy D Robinson ventured into the studio in 2007 and began setting his poetry to music. His debut full-length spoken-word CD was titled MIND JUICE. MIND JUICE is a timeless collection of Robinson’s poems set to beautiful music. The inspirational and uplifting MIND JUICE CD was composed by Bruno Linares and narrated by James Randolph. MIND JUICE, currently distributed through Best Buy and other outlets, is the first book of Robinson’s sixteen-book collection to be produced into a spoken-word musical CD.
From the MIND JUICE CD sprang Robinson’s first international chart hit “A Tiny Shoe.” Setting lead track on MIND JUICE, “A Tiny Shoe,” to dance music, was world-renowned producers DJ Tracy Young, Josh Harris, Bruno Linares, FC Nond, Rafael M, Twisted Dee and DJ Paulo. Each creating their own spin on “A Tiny Shoe” for dance floors, they break through walls and consciousness with inventive production work pushing the track to #6 on the Billboard Club Play chart and #7 on the UK Music Week chart.
Currently hitting clubs and the charts is “In the Night,” Jimmy D Robinson’s second Billboard charting hit. The progressively futuristic “In the Night” single features luminous vocals from club diva CEEVOX. The lyrics are taken from Robinson’s poem of the same title found in his TIMEWARP poetry book. The remix project includes earth-shattering club mixes from Kinky Roland, Luverush UK!, FC Nond, Eddie Baez, Josh Harris, Twisted Dee, Rafael M and Jose Velez.
Today, Jimmy D Robinson is grateful for his life and is so thankful he weathered the many storms of his past to arrive where he is today. With over twenty books written, Mr. Robinson has finally found himself with the marriage of his poetry and music. Robinson’s book and music collection is often distributed to children in U.S. school systems as well as those in high crime areas, prisons and shelters. His works have been donated to many people as far as Africa and across the continent of South America.
