BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Composer/Conductor Brian Scott Wilson, winner of the International Trombone Association Composition Competition, cites as his primary influences the music of Stravinsky, Mingus and Mahler. Wilson''s eclectic style is a masterful blend of classic and jazz idioms that feels simultaneously familiar and new. Equally at home in the symphonic, choral and wind ensemble milieus, Wilson''s signature jazz-inflected harmonies are as evident in the whimsical Modes of Transportation (Symphony No. 2) for Orchestra as they are in the elegiac Orange Was Her Color for Wind Band. Wilson''s deep spirituality finds expression in ways that are both obvious (Avinu Malkaynu setting for cantor and chamber ensemble) and unexpected (the award-winning Avanti for solo trombone and percussion). Recent premieres include Whispers From Eternity for chamber orchestra and chorus, commissioned by the Harker School of San Jose, and From The Banks of The Moldovka, commissioned by the Catskill Klezmorim, both available from G. Meredith Publications. Wilson is a native of the Boston suburb of Lynn, MA, and a graduate of New England Conservatory (B.M.), the University of Chicago (M.A.) and the University of Arizona (D.M.A.). His teachers include Malcolm Peyton, Edward Diamente, Dan Asia, Ralph Shapey and Shulamit Ran (composition) and Barbara Schubert, Michael Walters, Gregg Hanson and Kurt Klippstater (conducting). In addition he was a participant in conducting workshops under Frederick Fennell and Sergiu Commissiona. An associate professor on the School of Arts and Humanities faculty at Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, CA, Wilson is Chair of the Department of Music. He serves as music director of the University of Detroit Classic Theatre Study Abroad program and is principal guest conductor of the Petaluma Community Band. He is listed in International Who''s Who in Popular Music and holds memberships in ASCAP, College Band Director''s National Association, Conductor''s Guild, American Music Center, California Music Educator''s Association, California Band Director''s Association, Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi and Pi Kappa Lambda.
