Bio
Gary has been blessed to have the opportunity to combine his abundant musical gifts with his love for Jesus in a music ministry that now spans over 30 years. His lyrics, which describe both beautiful and painful life experiences, always praise the Father while seeking to find the deeper meanings behind these events. The songs are developed from Gary’s own life experiences with God or what he has observed in the struggles and the triumphs of those around him, while always returning to the saving grace and promise of New Life through Jesus Christ.
As with many of his contemporaries, Gary began his music career on the secular scene in the early 70’s at which time he performed as both a solo act and as the lead singer for a number of highly successful groups across the country, while at the same time remaining active in local church music ministries. Gary started writing his original Christian Compositions when those same churches began to show an interest in offering cotemporary music as an alternative to traditional Hymns. The demand grew from just occasional special music during a given service or special event, to requests for entire concerts.
“In the beginning, the concerts were sometimes pure entertainment and sometimes real ministry,” Gary recalls, “I was immediately drawn to the ministry because my music and my passion has been about seeing lives changed. A letter I received at the time from a great young man told me of his giving his heart to Jesus at an Easter Concert I did in Nebraska one year. The details in that letter brought me right back to that special night. That and other testimonies like it are what really encouraged me to begin, and now to continue this ministry.”
Of the approximately 60 (and counting) original songs that Gary has written he finds it hard to select a favorite.
“Each one was written for or about certain people and specific circumstances that we’ve either experienced firsthand, or through the lives of others that we know and care about,” he says. “So, each one has become special to me for a different reason."
"Arms of God" (which appears on Gary’s ‘Welcome Home’ CD) was written for a childhood classmate of his one of his son’s who lost her life to cancer at a young age. “This was a heartbreaking story, Joy was the little girl’s name, and she was in 5th Grade” recalls Gary. “The whole community came together to provide support through a benefit concert. As the date of the concert approached, we were all praying for a miracle. In the quietness of prayer I was asking the Lord to heal her, and the Lord spoke to me and said that my arms, our arms, as the Body of Christ, are the Arms of God, and that as his representatives and witnesses in this life, we are called and empowered to minister, and to reach out to those in need, and that’s how that song was inspired and written.”
“Your Father Called” (which also appears on Gary’s ‘Welcome Home’ CD) was written after a loved one confessed to Gary that he saw his need for the Lord but questioned how God could forgive him after all of the bad things he had done. “Each song is like that. There are so many precious people and stories that tie into each song that I write.”
Every song that Gary writes has its own unique story to tell in regard to whom or what it was written for, as well as what it might mean to the listener on a personal level.
In addition to his two Contemporary Christian Discs, ‘Welcome Home’ and ‘The Battle’ Gary has two special CD’s that were written to celebrate the special events of friends and family. ‘Country Girl’ and ‘Once In A Lifetime’ are two unique discs that celebrate the gifts of marriage and love while continuing to celebrate the Lord’s role in each of our lives through these events.
Gary’s only goal is to touch the lives of as many people as possible through his music ministry while being faithful in his calling to the Lord, whatever form it may take, and wherever it happens to take him.
“It’s nice to hear my wife say, ‘You did great tonight’ and to have my three sons support me, but I don’t do this for personal recognition. It’s about helping others recognize their need for a Savior.”
“God is the sovereign of the Universe, and nothing is beyond His control,” Gary says. “You’re never too far gone to be forgiven, never too sick to be healed, never too used to be useful and never too bound to be set free.”
Gary knows everything God gives us is to assure us of an abundant, fruitful life. That includes His forgiveness, salvation, and commandments – gifts to help us now and in eternity.
“Having faith in Christ can give us the strength to be willing and able to carry our burdens so that we might see healing and restoration come in our lives and in the lives of those around us,” Gary says. “We can never experience true victory and peace until we receive this free gift of Faith in Him, and the power of His Spirit that comes with it. My heart’s desire is that everyone will one day receive that gift.”
