“Dip Your Beak” is the third album from Sasser and is easily his best. Stylistically it’s a combination of Dwight Yokum’s country songwriter style, Beach Boys’ harmonies and Beatles’ pop. The uniquely pop oriented country and folk is subtly layered with texture and warmth. There’s a nostalgic nod to 60’s rock in every track. Sasser says; “The idea of this album is as if the musical explosion of the 60’s happened here and now in the northwest.” To that end the songs are mixed with fuzz guitars, country picking, pseudo-psychedelic lyrics, and massive vocal overlays.
Of the vocal overlays, Erik Dewhurst (Producer/Mixing Engineer) says, “Some of the vocal arrangements will blow your mind in a Brian Wilson sorta way. There were 16 different backing vocal tracks on “Beautiful”. James’s brother (Greg Sasser) laid down 8 different parts with the left and right recorded as separate takes. On “In Deep” there were at least that many.” All those tracks blend together into a single blanket of sound and feeling.
This album represents a reintroduction for James Sasser and his music. The band has coalesced into a more focused form; James Sasser (guitar/vocals), Greg Sasser (guitar/vocals), Phoebe Osborn (bass/vocals), Kevin Major (drums/percussion). Brother, Greg has move from drums to guitar and added a new melodic layer to Sasser’s music. Kevin Major, who played with Sasser in Junco Parker, has come on board to give the music a steady backbone, a foundation and a frame.
