MP3 Louie Prez - Scam
Ray Pereira, Leo Dale and Doug DeVries take the passion and poetry of Brazilian guitar, add a whole truckload of percussion from West Africa and throw in some cool grooves from French heist movies. West African and Brazilian love child jazz.

About the album sound
Since the release of the album people have been asking - How did you get that sound? Louie Prez’s album ‘Scam’ was recorded using old school methods. Not in a fancy studio, where we all came in to record our parts on a different day. Not in a complex set of studio rooms where we looked at each other through double glazed windows and listened to each other through ‘not quite right’ headphone mixes. We did it using the old school method of sitting in a small semi circle in a great sounding room, a set of stereo mikes for the room sound and some spot mikes to boost the sound of each instrument as needed. We used the Reception Room at Maribyrnong City Council precisely because it sounded old school. No digital trickery. In addition the last two tracks on the album were recorded back at my studio in 2 rooms. They were recorded live with no overdubbing. Hope this answers all the questions about the recording process.
About the musicians
The music of this trio featuring three of Australia’s premier musicians will lift your spirits, make your toes tap and your heart sing. Doug DeVries is surely one of the country’s finest guitarists who, having established his reputation as a Jazz guitarist of the highest order has now discovered the romance and poetry of the Brazilian guitar. Leo Dale, who’s tasteful playing can be heard on recordings from bands as diverse as the Oxo Cubans and Zebra Crossing adds the alto sax and the flashy suits while percussionist Ray Pereira dips into his suitcase of rhythms and provides the band with sounds from Africa, Cuba and Brazil. The music is composed, yet improvised. It may sound like Jazz to you, but then again! Brazilian? African? Whatever you want to call it, it’s got a hell of a groove and it sure sounds sweet.
About the cover
Leo was watching the old Steve McQueen movie the Cincinnati Kid. It a classic card shark film - poker. One of the scenes opens with a slow shot of a late night card game, shot directly from above, the cards, the people''s postures, the props telling a detailed story without dialogue. We were lucky enough to obtain the services of Phil Greenwood, a photographer with an ability to create lighting like a Rembrandt painting at the same time as relaxing the musicians to the point we completely forgot he was there. After a while we felt like we were sitting around a table after the gig at 3am, telling the old stories. It was 10am - how that works is another story altogether . . .
Who is Louie Prez ?
Charming and annoying, Louie scams his way and hangs around
He’s a user, a provider, who drinks the band rider
Met Ray in Havana, scammed Leo in LA, surprised Doug in Sydney,
and then disappeared for . . . months
Surfaced in Singapore, tagged along to Tokyo, arrested in Jo’Burg
he then took flight
Loves the night but disappears at first light
