Details:
Terry Figuera Kinsale was born in San Fernando, Trinidad--the "second city" of the southernmost island in the Caribbean chain. His love for Trinidad’s national instrument, the steel drum or pan, was born in the 1950s--only five or ten years after the pan itself had been invented. Like many of his countrymen, the pan became music, religion, politics, and a fire in the soul, all rolled into one instrument.
Since then, Terry''s reputation has grown internationally. In 1986 he traveled to London with the prizewinning steel orchestra Skiffle Bunch, where he performed at the Commonwealth Institute Carnival Music Village alongside Calypso superstar King David Rudder. In the years that followed he has returned frequently to England, Wales and Scotland to perform at various music festivals. Terry, who currently resides in Oakland, California, has also been featured in shows in Toronto, Martinique, Venezuela, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Germany, Italy, the United States, and many other European countries.
Fusion, an amazingly wide-ranging CD, spotlights Terry''s impressive command of his instrument, and celebrates his love for the calypso-based music of Trinidad and Tobago as well. This set is not limited to Trinidadian grooves. Like many of the great, early pan recordings, it ranges from calypso to classical, rock to jazz. There are tunes by the great jazz pannist Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, calypsos by grandmaster Lord Kitchener, and a Panorama composition by Andy Narell. You''ll also hear jazz tunes by Kenny Durham, soul grooves by Grover Washington Jr., samba from Santana, a classical favorite by Franz Liszt, and several irresistible originals by Terry all reinvented for the pan.
Terry''s easy-swinging music features Carolyn Walter on sax, Clayton Hazel on keyboards, Cliff Manswell on bass, and vocals by local favorite Russell Codogan. For a taste of sweet T&T music with a added splash of Bay Area sophistication, you can''t miss with Fusion.
Inspired by Robert Greenidge, Len "Boogsie" Sharp, Mervyn Padmore, and Junior Regello, Terry sends a shout out to Lystra Gonzalez Figuera, Rachel and Terry Figuera Jr., Clayton Hazel, Ashton Craig, Cyril Boldon, Clinton Crawford, Michael Goodwin, and a very special thank you to all of the musicians who played on the CD.
