Details:
Solo artist / drummer / songwriter, Tom Panich, was born and raised in rock city - Detroit, MI. Tom started playing drums in 1969. He has played various styles of music, from progressive rock to alterative Christian rock.
After playing the local bar scene in suburban Detroit for 3 years, Tom moved to northern California and began to play the club scene from San Francisco to all parts of northern California. The bands he played drums for opened for artists such as Huey Lewis and the News and David LaFlame of It’s A Beautiful Day.
After nearly five years in northern California, Tom moved to Los Angeles where he joined a group that was already being broadcast on local Los Angeles radio stations. He later recorded at Lion’s Share (Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers’ studios) where famous Motown songwriter, Reggie Dozier, engineered the project.
The legendary Richard Berry, writer of the unforgettable song, “Louie, Louie”, produced the recordings.
After 10 years in the LA music scene, Tom moved to Portland, OR where he began drumming for various alternative, grunge, punk and death metal bands. After five years in the Portland, OR and Seattle, WA punk scene, Tom decided to quite drumming for secular bands and began to produce Christian music. He later became very involved in playing drums in Christian conferences and for various prophetic ministries across the United States.
In 2004, Tom hauled his gold, double-bass ROC drum set into the recording studio. “War Drums” was spontaneously laid down and recorded in less than 8 hours. Most of the tracks have the custom-made, limited-edition ROC drum set as a drum bed track. Tom then created overdubs with hand drums and various percussion instruments.
The day this warring drum project was birthed in the studio, Tom looked over his shoulder as he was loading his drums into the recording studio and saw that Mt. St. Helens was smoking once again. (In May 1980, there was a catastrophic eruption of Mt. St. Helens which caused much destruction and many deaths.)
This CD is the manifestation of various mandates God has given Tom to release unity and freedom of worship in the church. The instruments used on this CD were collected from all around the world - giving this CD it’s global flavor.
Each of the hand drums, originating from the United States and foreign countries, was later used as the inspiration for the titles of the drum tracks.
Instruments utilized on each track of “War Drums” are: 1) ROC drum set, Brazilian tom-tom, Meinl circular rainmaker; 2) ROC drum set, Color Chime metal xylophone, untuned African xylophone; 3) Pearl tube cajons from Thailand, Latin Percussion clay udu, spring drum; 4) ROC drum set, ankle bells, Native American drum; 5) ROC drum set, Brazilian snare and tom, Pearl tube cajons; 6) ROC drum set, Trinidad mini-steel drum, bells; 7) ROC drum set, Israeli shofar, conch shell, Turkish flute, large & medium Pakistan darbukas, Egyptian darbuka, Turkish doumbek, mini-Turkish doumbek; 8) African slit drum; 9) ROC drum set.
