Details:
Gilmary’s music is a blend of styles ranging from honky tonk to simple fingerstyle folk. Influences include old folkies like Tom Paxton, Bob Dylan, Loudon Wainwright, with a hint of Susan Werner, Cheryl Wheeler, and Christine Lavin.

“I grew up listening to folk music. My older brothers and cousins all played guitar and sang, so it was a foregone conclusion that I would play as well. The songs of Tom Paxton and Peter, Paul and Mary color my childhood memories, along with old standards and Broadway musical numbers. Someone was always singing something, although it was fifty-fifty whether or not they knew all the words.

“I started out as an actor in Chicago, running my own company for a time, then branching out and working with many of the fine Off-Loop companies that populate Chicago’s artistic landscape. My musical style never quite fit into the standard musical-comedy genre, although I have appeared in plays that included folk music and even a little banjo picking! Somewhere along the line I started writing music. I have a soft spot for Loretta Lynn or anything that you might have heard at the Grand Ole Opry in the 60’s, (the Queens of Country are all my heroes), although my favorite songs have always been those that tell me a story, like the songs of Gordon Lightfoot or Harry Chapin. I try to do the same when I’m writing and take the listener on a little journey, or maybe just a walk around the block. The songs that made it to this CD are a mixture of old and new songs, some autobiographical, some not. I hope you enjoy them.”

Gilmary’s work with The Ramova Brothers in 2006 and 2007 prompted this debut recording. The Ramova Brothers, led by her brother Mark Doyle, are a modern day acoustic rendition of the ‘50’s television show, “A Cavalcade of Stars”. Comprised of some of the best singer/songwriters in Chicago, The Ramova Brothers total nine singers and musicians performing together on stage a couple of times a year and culminating in sold out Christmas concerts benefitting the WGN Radio 720 Neediest Kids Fund.
