About the singer-songwriter...
‘There’s weightlessness in innocence, so heavy to know that the ground right before you is where your feet must go...’ Ride That Swing (1) will take you back to the days of pumping a swing up to the highest point and jumping off.
Patty Finney’s coming of musical age was during the days of the Armadillo and outlaw country although her childhood in South Austin was spent listening to everything from Nat King Cole in hi-fidelity to rockers in her living
room blaring Gloria, studying classical piano, symphonic percussion, folk, rock and roll and jazz guitar.
Later playing a gig downtown with th’ Mezz jazz trio where it seemed no one was listening... from the recesses Lady Bird walks straight up to Finney and says, “I have so enjoyed listening to you sing!” No wonder Finney invokes ‘Keep it beautiful, beautiful Texas - land of the clear blue skies’ in the tribute Lady Bird Waltz (2).
What’s hotter than Summertime in Texas (3)? Maybe Dog Time (9) or the lament I Want You To Call (6). Finney lays on the jazz from years covering jazz greats Charlie Parker,
Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday and more and doesn’t forget the bossa nova in Hang On (4).
Water Under the Bridge (5) and The Midnight Train (7) are true Texas folk tales while the waltz Half A Moon (9) soothes even the biggest kid. The finale Things I Didn’t Do (10) is an upbeat tribute to Dr. Randy Pausch.
