In the early to mid 1980s, northeast Ohio had a striving
roots/rockabilly scene with acts such as Alan Leatherwood, The
Swingin'' Caddilacs, David Loy & the Ramrods, The Walking Clampetts and
more. One of these bands, Tempo Tantrum, was lead by a cat named
Allen Jeffries (aka Jeff Pollock). Tempo Tantrum built its name on
combining a hard-rocking sensibility with classic rockabilly and surf
sounds.
All good things come to an end, and by the late 1980s, most of these
bands were gone, as was the rockabilly ''scene''. Allen Jeffries, a
lifelong rockabilly addict, never stopped collecting rockabilly sides
and longed to return to singing. Fast forward to 2008: Allen Jeffries
felt it was time! He contacted his old friend, cult rockabilly legend
Memphis Mike to produce this, his debut CD. The two picked out a
collection of classic rockin'' tracks and Memphis Mike put together a
studio band featuring himself (guitars and upright bass), Legendary
Tremblers bassist Rob Jacob (electric bass) and former Link
Wray/Vibrochamps drummer Gary Weiss. Rounding out the sounds are west
coast sax phenom Carly Litvik and The Jagtones (Joey & Hermy Granati
of the Granati Bros.).
The basic tracks were laid down in 3 days time. Memphis Mike and his
long time engineer David Granati set to work mixing this collection
determined to make this one of the hottest rockabilly releases of the
past 25 years! 10 classics in all and each featuring Allen "AJ"
Jeffries'' dark, smoky vocals. Its clear that he''s been influenced by
the likes of Elvis, Jack Scott and Mac Curtis but the end result is
truly his own. A must have for rockabilly fans the world over!
